I'm going to New York in a couple of weeks for a wedding, but I'll arrive a week in advance. I'd love to do some shopping, but of course I do not want to pay more than I would do back home in Europe.. What brands should I visit?

Also, are there any sales in mid-october?

I'm thinking clothes, shoes, coats, bags, etc.

I lived in the USA for many years, but I’m from England.

Here’s some examples of price differences in 2000 when I moved to the USA:
Levi’s 501’s sold for £70 back in 1999, which was the equivalent of about $120. In the USA, you could buy Levi’s 501’s for $30.
Cigarettes sold for £5.00 a packet in England, but you could buy a pack in the US for about $2.50.
For what you spent on a litre of petrol in the UK, you could spend the same amount and get a gallon in the USA.

Most things are much cheaper in the USA. Clothing, shoes, jewellery, accessories ...the list goes on. There are a few exceptions to the rule, but not many. There are nearly always sales going on in the malls, just about every week stores have sales. My advice though, being as I haven’t lived in the USA for about 7 years is to a Google prices before you buy. Happy shopping, and enjoy the USA!

This has been my experience also.

Keep in mind that most (all?) European countries have (much) higher VAT than the sales tax in various US states. Higher VAT = higher prices. Also, in the States, some things are tax exempt, depending on the State (I believe NJ has no tax on clothing, IIRC) and that is just a hop away from NY.

Levis is an American company and yes you can find them cheaper in USA. I have friends who told me so as well. Generally, you can't say that all those clothes and accessories products are cheaper there. It depends on the brand and the country's terms of VAT and other factors. Global brands sell at different prices on continents.

From my experience living in the UK for nearly thirty years, then living in the USA for another thirteen years I was able to determine that buying average products from average stores was generally cheaper in the US. As I said before, there were exceptions to the rule. Also as the other lady said, sales tax is quite a bit cheaper.
