Has anyone has seen/purchased/used the BOYY Wonton bag? Thoughts? Pros/Cons?

It's so super cute, and neatly addresses a lot of the design decisions I don't like in similar-looking bags (e.g., Hermes Lindy and Loewe Hammock), plus it's a lot cheaper by far than either of those other two.

Attached is a pic of the bags from Google. Cross-posted in the BOYY Bags Pictures and Chat thread as well, but that thread is a little quiet lately (mods, please remove if this is against the rules)

Happy new year, and thanks in advance!

Haven't purchased, but thinking about it. I can live without the Loewe bag. Some people already called the lindy a fortune cookie bag. Wonton is everything I wanted Lindy to be. It's just a tad sleeker.

I also want it to be wonton colored. Ovaltine I like but sold out Sesame I love. French saddle seems so lush caramel in some pictures, but a tad to brown in others. And Turtledove was grained. That's always a plus for me. Since Boyy comes out with new colors a couple of times per year, I can wait for the perfect taupe to come along.

I am also a tad stuck with the size. The 25 is a perfect weekender and 20 also fits a lot. But I adore micro bags, so maybe the charm will be my best bet.

As you can read I'm not sure of anything at all, but since we arn't going anywhere, bags can wait. Do you have a prefered size or color?

@Egel , I really liked the look of the Loewe hammock when it first came out, but it looks strange and floppy when worn any way besides strictly handheld, PLUS the fact that it doesn't have any sort of reasonable closure. The lindy looks too much like a duffel bag to me when filled, it's too fiddly to try to get in and out of, and there are just too many design elements (turnlock! fiddly straps! zippers! external pockets!) As you say, the BOYY wonton is just so much sleeker and more architectural. I especially how you can unhook and cross the Wonton's handles for a different look.

I think it looks best in a neutral to offset the slightly unconventional shape. Ovaltine seems to show up differently depending on who's photographing it, and I'm comparing it against the Loewe puzzle in Tan, which is the strongest current contender for a rich-looking medium brown bag in my closet. French Saddle shows up slightly too orange on my screen and Sesame is a little too light for my habit of wearing dark denim, so I am desperately jealous of your ability to even consider it.

Black is my usual, but the interesting nuances of the Wonton would get lost in a dark color. Turtledove is my favorite but I can't tell if it's warm or if it's got a slight lavender undertone (and as far as I can tell, is moot point anyway, since I don't see a Wonton in turtledove right now). Ideally they'll come out soon with a grey-brown taupe similar to Hermes' etoupe.

I'll probably choose the 20; I usually carry enough for a 25 but am worried it might look a bit unwieldy in that size with the additional height from the handles (and I have other bags that size). Realistically, we've got a bit of time to wait this one out, but I'd hate for them to discontinue it before I get my hands on one. I've been eyeing it for months (aka, decades in quarantine time), and it's not like I've got anything to do to distract me besides vicariously shopping for bags I can't currently use. :panic:

I’ve looked at the Wonton too...for all the reasons mentioned above. In fact, I would choose it over Lindy - unless someone gave me a Lindy free, which I would sell to buy a Wonton and have tons of $ left over for other things! :P I think it’s actually a timeless, if not often seen, shape...a mix between a bucket and a satchel with multiple carry options.

The main drawback for me is that it’s just one open compartment with no divider or exterior pockets. And while it’s a cool concept the way the handles can be interlocked, I don’t see using this feature as I imagine it would make it harder to access the interior.

Haven’t seen one in person yet, nor any Boyy bag so can’t comment on quality or leather. The Ovaltine certainly looks luscious online!

lol @foxgal , I like your thinking, re: a free Lindy! I also love that no one really seems to have one (although that certainly seems to be working against my favor in this instance!)

Since I carry things in pouches and tend to shove a scarf or sweater (and snacks!) in my purse whenever I'm out, I don't mind the open space too much, as long as it's not too deep (e.g., Celine Sangle Seau :crybaby:). Probably a purse organizer could help with the black-hole-ness.

Regarding the crossed handles, I was thinking maybe it could be carried *across* the handles instead of through them? Not sure if it's comfortable or if it makes getting into the bag more needlessly complicated, which is why I'm so curious if anyone has one or seen/held one....

@cczh I have the tendency to swing my bags around. Although I use pouches, a closed compartement is just so much more safe. That is also what put me off in the Loewe bag. It's gorgeous but not fit for my lifestyle.

I like the play on words an the idea of a modern day bag playing into my Asian heritage does make me want to have this bag as much resemblance as an actual wonton. Although I love the light blue and the sage, I don't feel the need to Wonton them.

I have enough black bags, the Wonton in black will make it just another pretty black bag and even less wear for all my other black bags. Not afraid of color transfer because I wear a lot of beige and caramel colored long wool coats. Even on a light bag, color transfer will be fairly minimal. Grained will be more important than the actual color. Smooth leather is fine in a charm, but anything bigger than that is not practical anymore. Something that looks like Etoupe would be amazing indeed. Wouln't rule out caramel either.

The charm will make it more of a gimmick than a bag and that would be right up my ally. The 20 will be big enough for a bag. The 25 is more of a weekender. Something I lack and before I traveled at least once, up to four times a month. I know I will get my wear out of that and it wouldn't compete with the bags I already own. Because I used it so much, the end of my current weekendbag is quite near. Since I don't travel now and want a light bag, it's best to wait for the summer color story. Although I get the correlation between the pandemic and bags, or other piques of interest. After years of lurking I finally have enough time on my hands to actively post here. So if you don't want to wait you really don't have to. Just post a picture when it arrives.

What do you want to carry in it? I think 20 might be more spacious than it looks. If you already have enough bags in 25, than it might be nice to branch out a bit. The opposite of what is going on in my closet.

Same! (also, BOYY has a Thai co-founder. Representation for the win! :happydance:)

The 20 would probably be *just* enough tbh. My usual non-work purses are a Celine nano luggage, Lady Dior medium, or Balenciaga first, but those are all squarish. I'm not planning on wearing it un-Wonton'ed often, so allocating for the Wonton's rounded shape, things will either need to be strategically tetris'ed in or I'd just have to live with the little protruding bumps. The 25 is roughly the same size as the Givenchy Small Pandora, which is what I use when I need slightly more for the day, e.g., scarf or mini umbrella, and is able to fit a cardigan, but agreed, is probably bigger than one would think.

In terms of what I normally carry:
* Phone (Samsung Note): ~16cm
* Sunglasses + glasses in a soft pouch: 15cm
* Keyholder/card holder: 10cm
* pouch containing lipstick of the day, a pen, single dose pack of antihistamine/ibuprofen, bobby pins, eyedrops
* airpods
* packet of tissues
* crackers
* baggu folding bag

Usually phone is in my pocket and antibac is looped 'round the handle, but they should still fit into the bag, which doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room.

The Wonton charm is so stinkin' cute though, but too small except maybe for weddings. I like the Disc too, although it does remind me of that crazy Chanel hula hoop purse, lol.

I know you said you were going to try to wait, @Egel , but Mytheresa has a French Saddle wonton charm at 40% off right now, if you're interested :smile: https://www.mytheresa.com/en-us/boyy-wonton-charm-leather-crossbody-bag-1636615.html

(Also, I only travel with a Neverfull MM or Le Pliage and thought I was a light packer! What magic minimalism do you practice that a 25 can be a weekender for you?!?!?! *bows in awe and supplication*)

Trust me if I say that I know that the French Saddle is on sale on My Theresa. I am waiting for it to drop to at least 50% off because it's not my prefered color. The size is roughly as big (or small) as other micro bags of mine, so I will actually get use out of it.

For your every day needs the 20 should be enough. A scarf, mini umbrella and cardi are not things you need every day. If you do, you already have bags in those sizes. By the way, the bags you already have are gorgous.

My magic minimalism @cczh is nothing more than experience. I've always lived quite far from boyfriends or friends. I know what I need for a weekend away and if I don't have it I borrow something from them. It's not the same as going somewhere unknown and sleep in a hotel. Although I currently would love that feeling of just getting away from anything and everything.

Apparently my mom ordered the charm :nuts: I haven't seen my family for a while. Couldn't spend christmas or new years with them. So now I'm getting the charm for lunar new year. Still have nowhere to go, but will give updates in the new year.

That's so sweet of her :heart: :heart: :heart: ! Your mom sounds fantastic, and while it doesn't make up for not being able to see your family, what a great reminder you'll have until you can all be together again :) !

Please keep us (lol, aka, me) posted; I'd love to see reveal pics and/or hear your initial thoughts.

Again, congrats on your new Wonton!

I have a Boyy-Wonton-Whipstitch in red/white calf hair and like it. I have seen the Boyy wontons over years of trips to Bangkok as I always go into the Boyy boutiques there. I own quite a few Boyy items.

As for the wonton-whipstitch, it's good that I waited and ended up buying the red/white one when it went on sale on a European boutique website and for about 50% off.

Ooh which european boutique website did you find such a good deal? Did you choose 20 or 24, and do you find the magnet strong and secure enough for the bag? Thanks!

I think it was My Theresa, but months ago. I think that the red & white whipstitch calf hair wonton only came in one size which was the small sized wonton. As for the magnet, it's fine. That handbag is small so I can't hold much in it. But, with most of my handbags, I also carry a tote bag along with a small handbag. I basically use the small handbags to be able to quickly get to items that I need to use right away... wallet, credit cards, and car keys. All the other handbag items go into an accompanying tote bag.
