Hi all

I saw a calf box 40cm Birkin in a reputable reseller today. It is a pre-loved one. L Stamp. The condition is good with some scratches. The colour is navy.

Price is around USD11000. Is it a good buy?

Is a box calf navy very rare? Do you think it has good resell value?

Still searching hard on your 40, i see! :D

I think if you do a search on the reputable internet seller list in the reference section. you will see that most "used" birkin 40 goes from USD7,500 to 10,000. for something beyond that, it will be a NEW one by a reseller.

Whether it is a good buy depends on whether you like box. I assume indigo box which I personally love but I've seen it in other bags such as Kelly (directly from H) so I don't think it is very rare. But compared to TC or Togo, it is not as common. For rare non-exotic leather types for birkin 40, from my experience in terms of "rarity", would be (1/2) chevre or barenia, (3) box, (4/5) fjord/buffalo, (6/7) tc/togo.

Just my two cents, rarity is not relevant if you don't like the leather. You may also wish to read up on quality of box leather in the reference section if you wish to pursue this item!

I have only one thing to add..........The price people are willing to pay depends greatly on whether the item is what they are longing to get or not.......... Like hanyeu has mentioned that Chevre and Barenia in 40cm Birkin are fairly rare, but if you do not like those 2 leathers...........whatever price the item is you will sitll think that it is too expensive...........on the other hand, if you have searching for those 2 leathers for a long long time, you will just pay for whatever price the seller asks for.............KWIM..............

I saw the bag today and I quite like it. But in any event, it is not my HG. On a second thought, perhaps I really want to have a birkin and this is the second best I like so far. However, I appreciate that it is very difficult to care for box calf. I might end up buying it and owning it without using it. I should not take it just because it is a rare bag. Again, resell value depends on the demand and acceptance of this leather style in HK.

Thanks Hanyeu and sydspy. I think I will not take it. I should stick to my HG first.

Yes, be patient and wait. :)
If you just think of reseller value, then BOX definitely not your choice.
Anyway, not to find something you dont like or just for reselling it later, but get something really make your heart sing~~~

and if i might add, when the RIGHT one comes along, it will SING to you! :cloud9:

i only asked you to think hard about BOX because it is a VERY specific leather that requires special attention. hence, if you do proceed, you should know the pros and cons.

Box leather requires to be used, used , used, and...used .That's the only way to get its patina, its beauty and at by the same way : its strenght against all kinds of scuffs.. See Jane Birkin herself for further reference about Box leather .
