Boardwalk Empire

Unfortunately, the nudity and sex scenes are part of the HBO ethos. I don't know which came first the chicken or the egg. They have nudity/sex in all their shows or they think that viewers expect or want nudity in all their shows. Too bad that Scorsese had to sink to that level as he does not usually do that that sort of thing in his movies.

Ladybug, my comment was not personal to you and sorry if it appeared that way. I don't think that historical points, even when unpleasant and offensive, should be left out if they are establishing the time frame of the story.

The sex and nudity certainly did nothing to add to establishing the time frame of the story.

I don't know...remember the vise seen in Casino? His movies, in relation to organized crime are usually wrought with gratuituous violence.

That is very true and it was pretty bad except that they did not show the nudity and the sex. I could have lived without all the head bashing. The ending was brutal.

The Sopranos was no walk in the park either.

^ I think it was being compared to the Sopranos. Although I wouldn't know since I've never seen an episode. But HBO and Showtime is full of gratuitous nudity, sex and violence.

Yep. I think this is going to be like Sopranos, Scorsese-style.

Showtime did this with the Tudors. I guess they think this is what the viewers want. Plenty of unpleasant scenes in that show that were historically accurate to the time period.

Addition: crossposted with you Admat97. I actually wish they could leave 90% of that out. It is just a gawk factor for adolescent males.

^ I've never seen the Tudors either but I love Jonathan Rhys Meyers. I don't know how I missed it.

It might still be there On Demand. They will show it again and probably before they show The Borgias in 2011. That will be more violence and sex for sure LOL!

You missed some major mangling of history on the Tudors:P The only things they got right were the number of wives and that he dies at the end. LOL!

Thank you.

Now THIS show I am ready for! I thought boardwalk for me would be a good 'in between' show before the Borgias started, but I'm sure I will find something to replace. And now with Andy not coming back as Sparticus, I don't know what's going to happen.

Can't wait for Jeremy Irons! I have seen him on stage and he really is awesome!

Andy is not doing well? I knew he had lymphoma, but not well enough to return?

I was wondering if people REALLY threw the *F* word around so much in 1920 like they do in this show! I mean it had to be more taboo in those days. That woman that Nucky was sleeping with...was she a "prostitution who-oore" as Teresa of RHWofNJ would say, and is that why she actually said they were *F-ing* when they kept getting interrupted? Did those women say that back then? Was it even a VERB back then?
Just the use of that word so often made it seem current day to me and not 1920.
Curious what everyone else thinks.

Aimee, good question. The word is actually an old English word so it has been around for a long time. It was used as a verb to describe the sex act. Using it as an adjective came later and more about the time of WWII.

If you watched Deadwood, you got pretty sick of hearing the F bomb used multiple times in one sentence. Many people questioned the accuracy that.

I actually found a site that has all the slang of the 20's: http://local.aaca.org/bntc/slang/slang.htm It's the cat's pajamas!
