Birkin Value over Time

chanel's definitely do not hold their value in general. maybe a bright color would, if it has never been used.

as chanel prices go up constantly, if you buy one today and sell it in two years, chances are quite high that you will get exactly what you paid for because it will still be cheaper than the next price increase..

I'm with LG on this. I've been collecting Chanels for a while and have sold my fair share of bags (mostly Classics too seeing that's pretty much the only style I buy). I don't ever price them at a premium and I usually start at a fair price point, and let people bid. I have never, not once, gotten what I've paid for back, not even for brand new never been used bags that are less than one year old, despite the rapid price increase. The saying of classic Chanel will hold its value or even increase is not true, at least not for me; or maybe I'm just not selling it the right way :P

I think you'll get more value for your H bags when you let them go, but if we're talking about holding its value or possibly a profit should you chose to sell it down the road, Kellys and Birkins are probably the only exceptions.

This. Maybe only possible for some limited colour/leather combo Constance.

yeah you're right. actually i JUST (yesterday) sold a birkin for 4k more than i paid. chanel can be tricky that way - you raise a good point.

It's definitely a gamble ... I was posting on another thread about how I view spending what I have on Hermes bags as "parking funds" ... as my husband even says ... given the economy and what other investments are doing, this one actually doesn't seem so stupid at the moment. The bag won't go "poof" ... an investment fund can. At the end of the day, as they say, I've still got something to carry stuff in.

And I do love them, to boot.

I did totally appreciate what Perlare and Jessica Rabbit had to say, which is entirely true about fluctuating tastes and retail markets. It's always definitely a gamble, I just happen to be gambling on this one. I'd rather have a hand on an actual bag than chips in a casino or numbers on a statement sometimes.

agree that Chanels do not hold the same value as Hermes.. of course the Chanel

bags are not as pricey as the Hermes kelly or Birkin...the jumbo classic is around $4900??

Hermes kelly & birkin start higher...would buy Hermes anyday over Chanel....

and just to add to my last post.. if people decide to buy a birkin because they think of it as a fashion investment, there is nothing wrong with that whatsoever. yes, many people buy it because they love it, and maybe people choose to buy it because they love it and also might want to sell it one day and get their money back (or even more than they paid)..

as chanel prices go up constantly, if you buy one today and sell it in two years, chances are quite high that you will get exactly what you paid for because it will still be cheaper than the next price increase..

i agree with jessica... in my personal opinion, i dont expect to make profit when buying a birkin.. but the resell value is one of the "more make sense" justification for me (or maybe more for the people around me) to get bags (not just one.. coz who can actually stop at one) of such a high price...

and for my experience with chanel bags... i am planing to sell one of my classic flap and buy a new one in smaller size... i have been researching on the market price.. i was quoted a price that is at least equal or slightly more than my original buying price... but it is most probably due to chanel has been doing many major price increase....

IMO both brands has to maintain thei quality if they want to retain high value of the bag.... quality should increase hand in hand with the price pleasee...... oh and also.. customer service too... :P

not all bags.. my friend was trying to sell her valpraiso (do i get it right?)
and she was having a hard time selling it..
she lost quite a lot when she finally sold it...

I agree with everyone here who says buy it only if you love it. And that applies to all luxury purchases. If you go through handbag fatigue, then perhaps a birkin is not the best choice for you. With the current price increase and taxes, a 35 cm birkin costs over $11K, if you can find it. That's a lot of money.

I justify my Hermes purchases in the past because they will always retain some of its value. If I were to sell, I do not expect to break even, though for some of my older birkins and kellys, I probably could sell them break even or even make a small profit. I have consigned bags, and have lost some money on them. BUT, I do not regret selling them, it freed up some money that I spent on things I do wear.

Because of the price increases in the past couple of years, I have turned to reputable re-sellers like Kaleidoplace, Loveallbags, Haute Gallery too. The bags are beautiful, and the price points are far more acceptable. I am really unsure if I will ever be able to purchase an $11K handbag.

Yes do agree that you should buy only because you love it... as someone who

has both Hermes & Chanel bags for several years I certainly have gotten

my money's worth... when I break them down cost vs years, they are worth

every penny I have spent for them... and if I wanted another bag, would

definitely consider buying from a reputable re-seller...

You can consult the normal reseller venues for H, like eBay, Malleries, etc. to see what the prices are. Have you done that? I'm sure it's a range, and that condition is extremely important.

I agree with this as condition is extremely important and pen marks or serious damage or any missing essential part such as lock, keys or clochette or strap in case of Kelly devalues the bag especially pen marks wether inside or out is a big no no IMHO ....
