Hi All,

I have what I know is a First World Problem, but I'd appreciate advice/opinions please? I've been offered a B30 in Epsom Etain with RG hardware and my dilemma is this - the colour and hardware is perfect for me, but I'm not a fan of Epsom as I don't love how it feels. I have a Bearn in Epsom and it's okay, but not my favourite. So far, it seems I should reject the bag.

However, I know other ladies here mention that B30 in other leathers can be heavy (and B35 even more, but I don't have an offer for that...) so Epsom could actually be a wise choice for me because a) I have a bad back and b) a tendency to load my bags. I also don't like slouchy bags so Epsom retaining its shape could be attractive.

If it helps, my collection so far is Etoupe Bolide 31 in Clemence, Kelly 32 in Vert Cypress togo and Herbag 31 in Magnolia/Bleu Saphir. I'm 5ft 4 and slim build.

If I buy the bag, it is because I've made a considered decision that it's right for me - not with the intention of reselling so relative attractiveness in the used market is not relevant for me, and I am ok to reject as I am comfortable another offer will come in time.

If it were me, I would buy it.
I don’t love Epsom either, but I have a bag that a adore but don’t carry because it’s heavy (and my health hasn’t been great as of late, so the effort isn’t there, if that makes sense)
I know everyone likes to say wait fir the perfect spec’d bag, and logically, that is the right answer. But I know me. And the perfect colour/hardware/size doesn’t come around every day. While Epsom isn’t my favourite leather, it’s still Hermes, it’s still going to GORGEOUS. And Epsom is light and resilient. Life’s too short to wait around pining, if you’ll wear it and enjoy it, I’d go for it!
But, as @papertiger said, I’d go with your gut, as ultimately only you will know if this will make you happy. Good luck!

I was in this situation, SA called and it was in the time I didn't believe I am already sort of VIP (sort of) and will get +/- what i want. He didn't say Epsom so when I turned up super excited, it was hard to say no (despite total disappointment). I had the same reasoning like you (lighter, will not collapse also took colour better). But wasn't happy and didn't wear it much and in a way wasted opp to get something more suitable that year. Recently bought B35 in clemence and yeah, that's what I really needed (waiting for SO in togo now).
I'd say depends on funds and plans for (if any) another quota bag this year. For me it was a big expense as well at that time (I mean I wasn't able to fund anything similar until Feb this year).

I don't hate Epsom and have a few bags in my collection in Epsom. However, I have concerns regarding how the leather will hold up long term for bags made in recent years.

I have a 27 year old Courchevel (the former pressed leather before Epsom) B35. It still looks good and has been repaired well by Hermes. In comparison, my 2 year old Epsom B30 looks the worst in my whole collection of B's (e.g. Togo, Swift, Barenia Faubourg, and Croc). It might have been rained on and dried off. But so have my other B's.

I have a different take on the situation...This is a luxury item. A want that may serve a functional need, but its a luxury. Not a necessity and the boundaries for being practical...well, do they really apply here?:P
With the right high quality luxury item (in this case, Birkin) there is passionate love. If the feeling is that the bag you are considering is a compromise, then at best you will have a solid respectful relationship as opposed to un amour passionate.

Shouldn't your Birkin be a great romance?

And indeed, I LOOOOOVE my Bolide. All your kind words of advice have reminded me that if I need to think this long and hard then it clearly doesn't make my heart sing. If I was meeting a functional need then I'd stick with my Le Pliage, but for me at least, H is more than a purely functional transaction, so I feel I have clarity now.

I knew this was the right place to come for help!

I always say to myself , if it’s a maybe it’s a no. My very first Birkin 35, I just took it because I was so excited to finally be offered one and now I realize the size is way too big for me. At the time, I didn’t try other B sizes and was nervous of not getting another offer. My B/K collection consists of clemence, Togo, swift and Epsom. I really like my K25 sellier but in a Birkin I do love the other leathers. Maybe if you see it in person, you’ll know if it’s the right bag for you!
