I'm not certain that was a great title but I really need expert help! I'd like a single tiny diamond on a 16 in or 18 in chain. Tiffanys grades diamonds over .18 . My local family business jeweler does not. If I were to purchase a .21 stone on a platinum chain from Tiffanys , the price would be in the low $2,000s. But from local jeweler , same size stone on a white gold chain costs $460. For a diamond that small, please advise if better to get the Tiffany branded one. Platinum or white gold chain doesn't matter to me. Thanks!

I'm surprised no one commented or advised. I don't think jewelry subforum is as active as it once was. Or maybe big vacation week and slow on Purse Blog! Anyhow, if you would like - please let me know if you think a Tiffany GIA is worth almost 4 times the price than a non graded stone of same size. Thsnks again!

As long as your jeweler is excellent at making bezels (and you can get an awesome cut stone) then go for your jeweler. When I bought my .32 dbty I wanted a Tiffany one because I love the brand. I did buy mine preloved to save money. However if brand is not important to you, then get one made.

For that size I don't think it's worth it. As long as it sparkles and has the feel that you want, I think that will be sufficient. Not to mention what you could buy with the remainder!

Thanks! I really appreciate your help. I am going to my jeweler in 2 weeks and will report back.
I went with Braingavin.com and when I go to stiff why's the SA mistaken it for their brand and often to clean it. I would also check this online jeweler out before you go w your local one. Some others also recommend Idjewelers but I prefer BG bezel better.

GIA doesn't typically issue reports on stones under .5ct, though they will occasionally. AGS will down to about .33 I believe I would NOT pay the premium for a Tiffany DBTY, and get it made elsewhere. BGD can certainly do this far less expensively with a much more well cut stone--and you can get one with a grading report, as well, if you wanted.

Interesting. I have .27 and .30 diamond studs with GIA certs. I never knew that was unusual.

Thanks ame! I was hoping you'd chime in. I'm just nervous with buying from BGD - not seeing stone in person. I'll check out their site now.
Why exactly? They provide photos of the exact stone you're buying, and allow good magnification. If you want input and assistance from me, feel free to PM me here. I will definitely help you out!

Yea it is not common, or at least not as common anymore. They will do it if it's requested specifically, but for most gem dealers, it's incredibly cost prohibitive and time prohibitive to have every stone graded below .50 in the first place, but GIA often doesn't have the manpower, either, to handle such requests. So they usually only do it by request.

That makes total sense.

I think mine got certs because I was wanting to occasionally wear the pair in the same ear in adjacent holes, and the jeweler wanted to make sure they were the same size (mm across) and similar enough in color etc that I could wear them close together.

If I can just chime in for a second, I will say Tiffany diamonds are indeed beautiful. Although it is certainly true they mark up significantly due to the name, overhead etc. I can definitely say their diamonds are in the top ideal range and will be significantly brighter than what passes as ideal with many retail stores. With that being said if you have a local person you can trust who deals regularly with top ideal cut diamonds and understands proportions, light return etc then you could save on all the extra money ad get something beautiful ;) I would probably avoid ay other mall retail stores though..
