Recently, my engagement ring and eternity band have become horribly bent and disfigured and I am trying to figure out how this happened, the best way to fix it, and how to prevent it in the future.

I have an antique engagement ring with a 4.2-carat center stone surrounded by smaller diamonds set in platinum and the back of the band is almost flat, not rounded. I also have an eternity band in white gold which is even more bent and some of the small diamonds seem to have come out of the back. Could I have done this by gripping something for long periods of time? Either my steering wheel or pushing my twins' double stroller? I have worn these rings for over 7 years with no issues and this has happened over the last few months. I push the stroller every day and my twins now weigh over 30 pounds each so I do grip it pretty tightly. Any ideas on how this might have happened and how I can fix it? Thanks!

Jennifer

Hmm.. what metal are they made of? I cant imagine pushing a stroller or steering wheel would do that, but what do I know.

I do think we need to see a pic... mostly of this 4.2 carat rock. :graucho:

I thought platinum was supposed to be extremely hard. So sorry this happened to you. The gold ring that I wear on my right hand has been with me for about 20 years. I had to take the ring off for some surgery and I was surprised to see how flat the back of the ring was. But, I expected that out of gold.

18 kt yellow/white gold is extremely soft and can bend quite easily (well....it's soft!)

Is the diamond set in platinum?? Your jeweller should be able to restore your rings and make them look as good as new.

But yes.....the higher the gold content in gold, the softer and more pliable it becomes.

The eternity band is 18 carat white gold and the e-ring is platinum. The eternity band is much worse than the e-ring, but both are pretty bad. I wish I knew how it happened so I could be more careful after getting them repaired.

That does sound like you've put a lot of pressure on the metal. I can see why the gold one would have bent as it is a higher karat gold but you'd think the alloys would offset the softness...

The antique ering is possibly bending because it's thinner from wear or reworking/resizing over the years. That may need to be reshanked.

I had the same problem with my HW 3 stone which was set in platinum. HW reset the ring and custom made a much thicker platinum band. I would assume your jeweler would have to reset your engagement ring to correct the problem. Maybe he could make the band a bit thicker?

Here are some pics. It is hard to see how disfigured they are, but hopefully the photo on the towel gives an idea. The center stone is a 4.2 carat Old European Cut, VS1, K color. There are an additional one carat of stones in the setting, which is why it would be difficult to reset.

I've had that happen to one of my rings, it was made out of gold (I don't remember if it was 14k or 18k) but had a very thin shank. It's very bent, just like yours, very flattened. I don't think anything in particular happened to it, I think it was just too thin to stand up to daily use.

WOW. WOW. WOW. That almost seems like repeatedly too much pressure on those rings. You really may have done that with your stroller use.

It's not really hard as much as it's tough.

omg jennifer, your ring is gorgeous—bent shape aside, it's beautiful. too beautiful to be bent like that. take it to your jeweler immediately and get this fixed. they're gorgeous!!! that is so weird how bent they are. i guess you weren't kidding.

good luck and post pics after they're repaired.
