Hi everyone!

I’m going to buy a new SLG to go with my bags (all browns, beiges, tans - neutrals!) and unsure about this beige one. I’m getting the matching colour (mushroom) in the large tote but anxious that the wallet would get really dirty and ruined quite quickly? I love how elegant neutral colours look but unsure about a wallet.

Anyone got any beige wallets and feel confident? Hermès/Chanel/LV all have neutral SLG’s but was wondering how popular they actually are.

My next choice would be burgundy.

It really depends on a few factors.

1) How often will you use it?
If you're the type of person who rotates wallets, chances are it will remain relatively clean. If you're going to use the same wallet for years, it will eventually get a little dirty and gray over time.

2) Leather type and texture.
Leathers with more texture such as grained or pebbled leathers or epi leather are more scratch resistant, but they are also more likely to build up dirt and grime overtime. Much easier to see that build up on light-colored SLGs.
Smooth or box leathers are easier to clean but also are easier to show wear and tear (light scratches can be buffed out) and can stain and show staining more easily.
A quick glance at pre-loved sites can give you an idea of what a beige/nude or light color wallets will look overtime.

If you zoom into close up photos you may be able to find the dirt buildup that has accumulated overtime. And that just life.
YSL's grain de poudre nude or beige leathers are known for accumulating build-up overtime. I remember seeing quite a few dirty ones on the pre-loved market a while back.
Here is an unfortunate example:

3) What products do you use on your hands?
Hand sanitizers and lotions, while great for keeping clean and moisturizing the skin, can leave residue on items overtime, especially if not properly dried or completely absorbed into the skin, respectively.
I am not a fan of hand sanitizers for this purpose. I keep one on me for emergencies but I much prefer to find a restroom to wash and dry my hands.

4) What other items will you carry in your bag on a daily basis?
Other items will touch and bump against SLGs in a bag, we all know that. Some may cause color transfer, so that is something to be aware of. For the most part, honestly, it should be okay. But everyone carries different things in their bags, so it's more of a thought than anything.

I'm not trying to scare you. I am pretty cautious about buying light colored bags and SLGs because I am very heavy handed with my items and do not baby them. I have a YSL darker beige cardholder that I've been using for the past 6 months that has been wonderful, but I made sure to buy a darker beige color knowing my lifestyle and habits.
If you're the type of person who takes care of things, chances are you're probably much better than me and it will be okay.
Hope that helps, good luck!

It so depends on what color lining your bags have, will you be using an organizer, how often you clean out your bag, how often will you be cleaning&conditioning your wallet and with what products, are you using a key pouch or will the wallet be subjected to keys scratching and dirtying it...and what kind of material the wallet is made of. Grainy leathers are much more robust.
If you clean out your bag often, if you clean and condition your wallet regularly, shelter it from strong colors by using a light colored organizer and don't let your keys in contact with the wallet it will last a long time.

Thank you for such a generous reply! I have an LV brazza wallet, a Mulberry darley wallet in clay, and long zip wallet in clay so i do switch my wallets quite frequently.

I’m leaning towards burgundy as I think it will suit most of my bags - including my one black bag!

I have a chalk Gucci (Guccissima) purse which is basically stamped leather (not sure what Strathbury leather is). It's actually been fine. It looks like new but it's 12 y o.

Every now and again when it look slightly dim (not grubby) I use a tiny dab of clear glycerine soap on a clean, damp white cloth, wipe gently with the reverse side (no soap side) and then use a tissue to soak up any residue moisture and leave to dry. I use the same method for some light bags too, like my off-white calfskin Chanel, Ivory YSL.

Beige and white do not look good with grime but they're easier than people think to keep clean. Bright yellows, blues, pinks etc look even worse dingy IMO, at least light neutrals look 'natural' with a little bit of 'age' to them.

Thank you for your insight!

Strathberry’s leather (for most of their stuff) is a smooth calfskin. Barely noticeable grain. I’d consider it smooth.
