Does anybody have any idea what this is? What stone? If it's a designer?

I've noticed Barbara Walters has been wearing this necklace for years and I'd love to know more about it. I snapped a few shots of her wearing it on the View from my laptop so pictures are a little strange.

Also if anyone can tell me how to change .png to .jpegs I'd appreciate it. I think .png pictures are only visible to apple users...

My mother has some earrings made of rough cut rubies. The rubies look a lot like the beads in this necklace.
Edited to add: When I was watching Joan Rivers on QVC, she mentioned that she had given some pieces from her QVC line to her friend, Barbara Walters. Perhaps this is one of them.

Very pretty! And the way the colour catches the light makes me think they are expensive.

Who knows if it's Joan Rivers or super expensive. She can certainly afford the real deal. But if it's rubies... wow!

I've seen rough cut rubies at gem and jewelry shows for really reasonable prices. They're low grade rubies and are very shiny and glittery when cut nicely, but are cloudly and/or included (so they couldn't be used as a solitaire piece in jewelry, for example). I saw a ruby and sterling bracelet, for example, that had about 7 large, faceted rubies in it that was selling for $25 or so. They also make dyed rubies that are even cheaper.
Now, Barbara Walter's necklace has a ton of large beads, and these were wholesale prices.. but still, you might be able to replicate this look for a decent price if you bought faceted ruby beads and either strung them together yourself (if you were crafty), or had a jeweler or artistan do it for you.

This: http://www.etsy.com/listing/6475053...cklace&ga_page=2&ga_search_type=all&ga_facet= is what I'm referring to with the beads.... I'm sure if you poke around etsy, you could find more.

ETA: Here's a necklace that's like a baby version of hers:

And this one is like hers, but ruby quartz (not sure exactly what that is, but it's pretty)

In fact, if you do an etsy search for "faceted ruby necklace" under All Items, you will come up with a lot.. good luck!!
