I almost got the 42mm, but it was just a touch too big. I love big, big watches so I kept trying it on . I ended up the mid size and love it. It is still a big watch.

The mid and large size are with automatic mechanical movement. Only the small is quartz! Check Cartier website! )

I got the smaller size ballon bleu and it fits my wrist perfectly without looking too flashy. It looks great for night and day and the underface of the watch lies flat against my wrust. I love it!

I'm petite (size 0 or 2) and don't think the 42 mm size is too big on a small lady's wrist, especially if you like larger timepieces. Even in the largest size, the Ballon Bleu does not look bulky because the case is not thick (it's only 12 mm) so the watch still looks sleek and elegant. Here's a modeling pic of the large Ballon Bleu in 18K yellow gold and stainless steel on my wrist. I think it definitely stands out in this size.
