Updating:
I turned it on today & it seems to be functional. However, the backlight under the keyboard is only partially lit, and the keys, of course are sticky underneath.
There's no apple store where I live, but there is an authorized reseller, and they do repairs. They're closed on Sundays, so I'm going to go in on monday and see if they'll open it up, assess damage, and clean the sticky up for me.
