I haven't heard of the first watch and I didn't know that Timex and Fossil made watches that didn't have battery movements, both of which would give me pause. I think that generally it is very difficult to find a quality mechanical watch in the <$1000 price range, so I would ask why a mechanical watch is important to you and have you think about a nice battery watch instead (even Cartier uses batteries in almost all of their women's watches!) if you're set at your price point. I'm fairly old school about my watches and only wear mechanical, and they're definitely an investment. If you want to delve into the wonderful world of mechanical watches, I would point you toward the mechanical watch forum www.timezone.com. The people there are very helpful, and if you posted in the general or ladies thread asking for suggestions in your price range they would try to be helpful, and would have suggestions for higher-quality watches than the ones you are looking at, but at reasonable prices. I just skimmed an existing thread on sub-$500 watches, and brands mentioned included Tissot and Swiss Army/Victorinox.

I myself don't own one but my husband has Tissot Ballade for a few years and it looks and performs beautifully. Please note that is has sapphire crystal that doesn't show scratches, it is not so frequent on relatively inexpensive watches.

Thank you for your reply.

So if I was looking at spending £200 on a watch, which mechanical brands would you recommend.

Thank you for your reply.

I really like the Tissot ballade watches you posted above and the fact it has a sapphire crystal as opposed to glass is good for the price as some of my watches have scratches on the face.

I have been looking at Citizen Eco Drive watches and wanted to know those of you who have one what do you think of them and are they good value for money.

Also is an automatic watch better than a mechanical watch?

Just interested in your thoughts. I don't want to buy a watch and regret it later.

thanks,

Watches that do not run on batteries are all called mechanical watches. Within the realm of mechanical watches there are watches that wind themselves through the natural movement of your wrist and hand, and watches that require hand winding. The former are called "automatic." It's a personal preference between automatic and manual winding, but I think most people prefer the convenience of automatic.
