Hi everyone! This is my first time here and I've learned so much from reading the posts. My boyfriend and I are talking about engagement rings and have decided to go for a simulant instead of the real thing-FOR NOW. I have very expensive taste (don't we all!!) and we just cannot afford what I want in a diamond ring right now. I have done so much research about the Asha diamond hybrid and moissanite. There are pros and cons of both. My question to you is if anyone knows which one is better and more real looking. Has anyone compared the two in person? Most sellers are online! We will not be telling anyone it is a fake, so it MUST look as real as possible. Has anyone purchased either one? I'm leaning more towards moissanite right now, as people tend to say it looks more like a real diamond than the asha (asha is colourless and therefore isn't as convincing) and it lasts longer (harder than the asha). I want a 2 carat cushion, set as the fabulous Tiffany Novo ring. Also, has anyone been completely satisfied from a particular seller? Any suggestions, thoughts or advice? Thanks a million!!!

Moissanite, it tends to have more "fire" and it actually has more refractive light then a diamond so its super sparkly, plus only certain jewelry machines can tell its not a diamond because they are that close in characteristics. I think moissanite is really cool though....it originated from a meteor and a scientist found a way to clone its properties...and voila!! now we have moissanite! its like alien diamonds haha:idea:

Moissanite is very pretty, but some stones have a green cast. You've got to be careful when selecting. I love it. Asha looks pretty nice, but the Interlap CZ's are nice too, from photos I've seen. You can actually go w/ higher colors in that, so they don't look so icy. There was a great thread awhile back where someone posted all sorts of photos. I'll try to find it.

Thank you so much for your replies! It seems that when purchasing moissanite online, the colour is pretty much chosen for you...has anyone purchased loose moissanite or asha stones online (or offline) from a place they were really satisfied with? Thanks again...this is so new to me! (But so much fun to learn about!)

You know, many people (for various reasons) dont use real diamonds ... i would tell people it was a real moissanite as opposed to saying it was a diamond. There's no shame in it. Lots of people upgrade so you can say exactly what you said to us 'this ring will be moiss and then next one will be diamond'.

Had a 2ct Asha Diamond Stud, looks sparkly on its own but compared to a diamond side by side it just doesnt look that great. Lack of "fire". Purchased from betterthan diamond.com. Beautiful, well made setting.

Go for the moissanite! An Asha is a cubic zirconia gem. Even though it does have a diamond-like carbon coating, this will only improve its luster but not brilliance, fire, or clarity. It should be noted that this coating will protect the porous cubic zirconia from absorbing debris thus helping it not cloud up as all eventually do. But it is far from permanent.

And don't be ashamed of the moissanite. It's beautiful, it's a value, it's internally carbon-based, and it will last just as long as any diamond.

Hopefully you'll fall in love with it and decide not to "trade up" to a diamond in the future. Moissanite occurs in nature occasionally, it's a very real carbon compound (ie not a "fake), and it represents a union beyond material wealth.

And it's pretty. :)

Maybe you could go for a diamond anniversary band later but keep the moissanite as a physical reminder of the time being.

Besides, who has ever called a cultured pearl a "fake"? Synthesizing moissanite works on the same principle of using natural material in a particular environment to cultivate a larger gem.

I hope this helps.

Very helpful!!!

I love moissanite. I have 3 rings and only one has a slight green tinge but it is only really noticeable if it is next to a CZ, diamond, or one of my other two. I would just tell admirers it is a semi-precious cultured gem called moissanite. As others have said, not everyone has a diamond, and there is no shame in it. My moissanite have much more fire than my real diamond, in fact I like them better.

I would go for the Asha, if you want it to be the closest looking to diamond. Colourwise it's properties are the closest to diamond but refraction may not be as good. However, there are perfectly cut hearts and arrow Ashas out there, for a more expensive price that have just as much fire. I personally don't have one, but have heard good reviews.

Moissanite is extremely refractive to the point where it maybe be too refractive for diamond (it's got double refraction) and a different gemstone all together. Furthermore, moissanite has a greenish tint to it and won't be very high on diamond colour scale. There have been specific companies claiming to have been able to enhance the colour up to a G from Charles and Covard, but i think the fire/double refraction gives it away if you were to have it in direct light. I've attached a picture to highlight what I've just mentioned. You will see the huge amount of colour refracted in moissanite (left), while the diamond is more of a white colour (right).

In the end, do you want something that 'looks' like diamond? or another gemstone that is cheaper than diamond?

HTH!

I would go for moissanite as I like the history behind it. If you wanted to consider a fancy shape like emerald, you could get a gorgeous gigantic white sapphire and since a shape like emerald doesn't have to have fire, it would be an amazing ring. I love white sapphire the most. But if you're trying to have it look as real as possible than a cushion sapphire wont have fire. But it would be oh so pretty!
