Are you wearing your canvas LV in the cold weather (especially with outdoor dining)?

Hi there,

I searched the forum to see if there are any concerns with using canvas bags in cold weather, and most people said they had no problem with it, but they also said they weren't outside for a long time. However, this was all pre-COVID...

I live in NYC, it's winter, and we only have outdoor dining. If we do leave the apartment, I'm spending lots of time walking outside, in the subway, and eating outside (sometimes directly under or near heat lamps). I have been wearing my new Speedy B 25 DE, but I'm wondering if I should worry about it freezing and cracking, since I'm outside for long periods of time?

Are you using your bags in cold-weather outdoor dining? Any issues you've had?

I want to be able to enjoy my new bag, but I also don't want to ruin in the first month I've had it :)

I've never worried about it, but I live in Germany and I think it doesn't get as cold here as it does in NYC. I carried mine when it was -10 Celsius though and didn't have any issues. Are there any official recommendations from LV?

Good to know! This is what is on the LV website: "Leather and canvas is best kept away from elements such as water, oil, perfume, any alcohol-based solution such as hand sanitizers, direct heat and light, humidity, or environments that are too hot or too cold. Prolonged exposure to such elements may provoke unwanted damage or premature wear."

However, I find it very vague. What is considered too hot or too cold? How long is "prolonged exposure"? Is being near a heat lamp considered "direct heat and light"? :confused1: I'm probably over-thinking this...

You‘re right this is very vague and up to interpretation. I‘m sure other people will share their experiences soon! :)

I live in Pittsburgh. Our winters are pretty brutal. I carried my Jersey (DE canvas with taurillon leather accents) just about every day last winter (outside waiting for public transit, in the rain and snow, etc.). At the tail end of the winter a cashier at a store asked me if I just got it because it looked brand new. I stored it all spring/summer and when I got it back out in the fall it still looked perfect. Granted, I've only had it for about a year and a half, but it's really holding up remarkably well.

I'm not super hard on my bags, but I don't baby them either. I just live my life without thinking too much about it. (Exception: my DA Propriano doesn't get carried in the rain if I can help it, for obvious reasons.) DE bags are pretty hardy and can withstand normal wear & tear.

I think "prolonged exposure" mostly refers to storage conditions rather than a few hours here and there.

They make it vague on purpose so that it covers whatever they deem to be prolonged exposure or "too hot or too cold" on any given day. Then CAs can tell each customer that it was against LV recommendations when something happens so they don't have to repair or replace.

I've had that same question . I am in Canada and -30 possible on some day was giving me concerns. I have a package on the way in DE and will be using it daily but my bag will only be in and out of the car to do errands . So I am assuming it should be ok .
I will do a reveal with pics when I get it .

UV will damage most materials beyond repair so I don’t store bag on a window seal in sunlight! A bit of sun everyday won’t hurt.

High heat will also cause damage. Warm to hot ambiant heat is fine but extreme heat should be avoided so I don’t place my bags next to a fire, radiator or heat lamp.

In cold weather I figure the ambient temperature around my body is slightly warmer than actual temperature but cold is probably my least concern (though I wouldn’t store my bag in the freezer).

The element I really try to avoid is water.
