Continued from here.

This thread is for discussion on authenticity of Hermes Bags.

This is a free service. Our authenticators are volunteers who desire to keep counterfeiters and scammers from profiting from their trade, and to help buyers find authentic bags.

Before you submit a request for authentication, please search this thread to make sure that the item has not previously been authenticated. You can also search recently archived threads. Search by seller name, or, if the auction is recent, you may put the item number in quotes ("23456789") and search by item number.

:excl:
Search the current thread (the thread you are reading) first, then this recently archived one.

  • Authenticators are not required to answer every request. They will likely NOT answer a request that is not in the proper format.

  • Please include ALL pertinent details including provenance of the bag. Authenticators may also request additional pictures and/or information in order to assist with authentication. Close up pictures are essential when submitting an item for authentication.

NOTE: In private sale or other non-auction situations, please ensure that you include the following views of the bag, which need to be large and really sharp, ideally using the macro function of the camera. Visit this thread:

    report.gif
button to alert the mods to a troll or to rudeness on the boards. Ignore the poster until a mod can intervene.

  • Always be respectful when you post and treat others as you expect to be treated. This is an open thread and everyone is welcome to participate.

  • Please allow at least twelve hours before you repost your request. If the auction is ending soon, you may say so in your comments. Remember, we are just like you, and get on the PF when we have time, so please be patient.

  • Do NOT PM an authenticator or moderator to request authentication.

  • If you wish to reasearch a particular seller, please do it here.

  • Please refer to our reference section for general questions about Hermes. Finally, do not submit requests for something that is obviously a fake, e.g. the item says it is a replica, or a $200 Birkin.

AN IMPORTANT WORD ON FEEDBACK
Take a moment to read Authenticator Perigord1's great post on feedback.
Remember!!!A seller with Zero (0) or low feedback is a RED FLAG :sos:

Ladies (and gentlemen)--

Can we just talk feedback for a minute? Time to head back to feedback school!

When you are looking at a bag and thinking about bringing it here for the authenticators, part of your research should be into the seller's feedback.

While in the end it is all about the bag--feedback is, IMHO, critical. Why? Because even when you have legitimate images, if the feedback is suspicious you need to stop dead in your tracks. There is always the chance that the bag might not be in the seller's possession.

In this case there is 0 selling history. You then look at the buying history. Lots of stuff--but NOTHING over $10. Most of this seller's buying history has been for items in the $1-$3 price range.

So what does this say? There is an all-too-typical pattern on eBay. Potential seller starts buying enough little things to amass modest but positive feedback. Seller suddenly emerges with a--drumroll--birkin in a coveted color. I get the chills...

Speaking only for myself, I am going to suggest that posters take a minute to thoroughly investigate the feedback. No matter the images, I would never in a million years buy anything $$$ from someone who has only amassed this feedback history. I think I am right in assuming that it could very easily become a disaster.

Some thoughts on the Authenticate this Hermes . . .

A HUGE problem in this thread is people coming on here and disrespecting the authenticators.

I realize that from time to time some of the authenticators can feel at their wits end and and even be short with a poster in a way that seems impolite, particularly to someone who does not spend a lot of time in this thread, or in Hermes generally, and this is also something that we can all work on together. And I hope we will. Please PM or use the report button if you have an issue. Lets try to keep this thread on topic.

But.... sometimes authenticators veer a little bit off topic -- releasing tension with talk of martinis or a joke here and there; I understand the frustrations and as long as it is not at anybody's expense, is short lived, and not insulting I think we can live with a little bit of banter. If it becomes a distraction and goes on several pages, a moderator will certainly ask that we return to topic.

*****

But WE WILL NOT TOLERATE any disrespect for any authenticator on this board from anybody. I am going to make it a point to check this thread more frequently and please PM me if there are any shenanigans or outbreaks of nonsense here.

As a group we have saved people hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of dollars, and yet have endured endless jibes, taunts, insults and diatribes.

Authenticators have burned out and left, some not to return, because people who came on here and taunted and insulted them.

No longer. I hope everybody plays nice on this board from now on.

But...consider this a warning to anyone who comes on here with an agenda other than to get authentication of an Hermes bag: This is not the place for you.

We will ALWAYS err on the side of caution, and we will ALWAYS steer people away from an auction if we are not comfortable with its ENTIRETY, including seller history.

We WILL discuss pricing within certain parameters, such as if a markup is high or condition questionable. This is one of the AT areas on the forum where such discussion is appropriate.

We WILL discuss seller history or point people to toolhaus, goofbay, or the resellers thread.

We WILL do everything we can to make sure that our opinions are sound, but in the end they are only opinions, and I will not allow authenticators to get beaten up because someone does not agree with their opinions.

If you come here, and dont like what you hear, send me or another Hermes moderator a PM and do not challenge or berate the authenticators.

OK....lets see some bags.

Yes, bababebi, I agree with all you are saying, but there are questions here - and someone asked about the authenticity...I am sure the seller is honest, and I sincerely doubt would object to having the bag taken to Claude for authentication...but as it seemed someone was being assured something was authentic when I had specific information from an Hermes mastercraftsman which might perhaps make the authentication questionable, I thought I was being responsible to add what I did. I know I don't know everything, to say the least. But I think the question must be raised, and as I personally had questioned the seller and received what seemed an uncharacteristically defensive response, well, better to say something than not, no? :shrugs::flowers:

seller: a second chance resale
item: "brown gao" w/GHW
ebay listing number: 160462236328
link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...#ht_2061wt_908
COMMMENTS: I've been told by Reiko at San Fran Maiden Lane, who phoned mercedes at beverly hills in my presence to double check, that Gao's do not and never have come with GHW, and therefore GHW would have to be special order but that further no Gao's with GHW were known to have been special ordered. Does anyone know differently? I queried secondchance and was told "of course it's authentic, we don't know what you are talking about a horsehoe stamp" and that the leather was "believed to be clemence" which i don't think it looks like from the photos?

Thank you all for your generous time and efforts. This one is a puzzler to me as this is only the second GHW Gao I've ever seen, the first one - also on ebay - prompted the question to Reiko (SA at Maiden Lane San Fran) and her phone call. I was a little taken aback by the response from asecondchance as they are very reputable, the question was phrased very politely, and I have even sold some things there myself.
Thanks madeleinebasset for the information, but I agree that as Perlerare was saying, it is still possible that some Gao's with gold HW were made as part of regular production at H at some point. Unless one had access to internal records of every bag ever produced in every year it would be awfully hard to say for sure, no?

If so,this would explain why the secondchance bag does not have a horseshoe stamp.

I also commented on the bag when textilegirl originally asked about it, and I had another look. Although the pictures are not optimal, to my eye anyway it looks authentic. I said before that maybe the leather was evergrain and color noisette, but don't hold me to that.

As far as secondchance go, based on my personal experience with them as a purchaser, I do not think they would knowingly sell a bag that they believed was not authentic. However I grant you that they are not as expert as some people however, especially when it comes to leather type.

But I also think that precise knowledge of when the horseshoe stamp is used is something that perhaps only those of us who are really nuts about H might be likely to know, dont you think?

The bag looks authentic.
(One salesperson+one craftperson)'s knowledge (or lack of knowledger) should not lean us to discuss this bag forever.
Speculations on how many Gao with gold hardware were made or not since 2001, will not help in authenticating this very bag.

Checking with Claude is a very good idea. if one can take the actual bag to Claude. Otherwise there will be only other speculations.

The pictures provided are insufficient to authenticate the bag.

Honestly I would have thought that someone trying to sell a bag for over $10,000 could have tried a bit better. It just makes me wonder....

I would not recommend this bag on what I am seeing so far......if the seller wants to post better pictures, that's fine but it probably won't change my mind.
