Whenever I take my bags out, I'm always somewhat worried about theft. Thieves seem to be keyed into the value of these bags, so I'm always on guard for purse snatchers, or someone who would just "lift" the bag. There's also potential theft if my residence were robbed. My husband and I have been using Apple Air tags in our checked luggage when we travel, and love how we can track the bags on our phones. I'm thinking of buying Apple Air tags to hide in my Hermès bags so if stolen, lost etc, I could potentially track them down. Does anyone have any experience with doing this or have other suggestions for tracking bags?

I put one in my car for that reason. What I found out is that if my spouse or daughter drives my car, they get alerts on their iPhones that tell them they are being tracked by an Air Tag. It's a feature Apple introduced as I gather women were being targeted by someone putting an AT in their purse and then being followed... so it's to protect them. In any case, it means that a thief, if they have an iPhone, will get a notice and will then know to try to find it and remove it from the purse.

If you misplace your Hermes  it helps, but less helpful if it's stolen.

You have to disable the tracking notification in the AirTag to make it useful to track a stolen bag. It voids the warranty, I think, but it does work. I have AirTags set up this way hidden in specially made lens and body caps of my camera gear so I can track if they are ever stolen - I suppose I could do the same with my bags, but not sure how I'd hide the tag in such a way that a thief wouldn't see it.

My high high value bags (classic flaps & Hermes bags) are insured so personally that gives me peace of mind. If I’m out in a not great area I’d carry a less valuable bag. Personally don’t see myself putting the air tags in my bags but I can see why some would. I just feel like insuring valuables & arming my home with security protection (cameras, alarms, etc…) is the max I would do.

That's a good point. I didn't realize it would alert others to the presence of an Airtag.

How do you disable the tracking notifications?
