Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of starting to learn how to make jewelry. I might take a class in the fall but in the mean time, I bought a step-by-step book that explains everything. The projects for beginners are very simple, so I wanted to try them on my own. One problem though - where do I buy silver, gold, brass, etc? Do you buy it online or in person? Any information is appreciated!!!

Are there any jewelry makers here on tPF??? Please share your story! How did you start? What pieces do you make?

Hi! I have just taken a weekend jewellery course (see my current thread) and my jewellery teacher said that I would be able to buy sheet jewellery (silver gold etc) and metal wire online.... she was also going to send me a list of where to buy from but I live in the UK so that probably wont be helpful to you...

I also did a search on ebay and found lots of metal sheets for sale, wire and also basic jewellery tools like rolling mill, solder torch, bench peg etc... so possibly you might find the same on US ebay?

Are you near a city with a "jewelers' row" or "diamond district" type of area? You are sure to find all kinds of shops with jewelers findings and tools.
