We’re going to Florence for my 50th birthday and I’d like to be able to wear my present from my hubby which is a 36mm datejust in gold and steel with diamond numerals. It’s not a coveted model, but in the light of the increasing Rolex thefts is it still too risky to wear it in Florence? Obviously it’s a high tourist area, so I’ve done some research and there seems to be mixed opinions, although the majority say it’s safe. Just wondering if anyone here can share any knowledge.
As it’ll be hot there I’ll be wearing short sleeves so won’t be able to hide it. Should I just leave it at home? :(

If you are worried, then leave it at home. It’s better to be able to enjoy your birthday. Even in hot weather, I wear a light shirt with longer sleeves to give me an option of rolling down over my wrists or not. Happy birthday!

In the opinion of some friends who live in Italy. Florence is safe. Naples is not (in the context of wearing flashy jewelry with Rolex being one of the most recognizable watches in the world) . YMMV

Would you be comfortable wearing your Rolex in London with short sleeves? Luxury w have been targets all over the world in recent years. Only you know how important it is to take this watch with you to Florence and whether the potential risk is worth it.
No but Florence is different to London! I wouldn’t wear the watch in Milan or Naples either. But Florence has a very different vibe. It’s not ‘important’ to take the watch, but would be nice as it’s a special birthday gift. So was interested in hearing the opinion of others

since your watch is somewhat flashy, I would maybe take into consideration what your activities would be. would you be out and about late at night?
No we wouldn’t be out late at night - we’re very boring holiday makers lol. But we do like to go for a walk after dinner (usually around 8pm) and I know some side streets are quiet - so this would definitely be a consideration

I wouldn't wear it in Rome either (where I live). Maybe Florence is a bit less dangerous than these other 3 cities but I still wouldn't wear it to be honest! I don't even wear my SS plain Datejust in the summer here in Italy.
