Hi all, I wanted to know if anyone had problem with Cartier watch service? I took my Cartier Tank Francaise which I bought in 2016 in Sydney Cartier for a watch service at Cartier Hong Kong after the watch stopped working in October 2019. I was told that since I've never had a general service for the watch I must pay for the complete service and that Cartier cannot just change the batteries without the complete service. So I paid about USD$600 for a complete service and I was told that my watch was not water resistant and the time was running about 2 minutes slow. Anyway after the service I didn't take much notice of the watch until we flew back to Sydney to visit family and once the Covid19 happened I was pretty much locked up in Sydney (there was no point in going back to Hong Kong with the kids when schools and all playgrounds were closed in HK).

I changed the time zone when I arrived in Sydney and didn't pay too much attention to the watch.

I didn't bother wearing the watch as I was in semi-lockdown in Sydney from January onwards. But in March, I noticed that my Cartier watch was running 2 hours slow. It was reading 5 o'clock when it should have been 7 o'clock. But as I started to pull the crown out to change the hand, I noticed the hand on the watch move before the crown pulled out to complete open position when you can hear and feel the "click". My watch is not a date watch so there is only 1 position for the crown of the watch. I tested again to make sure that the hand moves when the crown is in closed position and true enough the hand moves even when the crown is closed/locked.

I took it to Cartier Sydney in March and told them the issues. It took 3 services and until June 2020 for Cartier to understand what the issue is. So 3 further services later, now Cartier says that their Sydney watchmaker advised that this is a "natural feature" of the watch, i.e., if you continually turn the crown that the hand will eventually move even if the crown is still in locked position. I tested other Tank Francaise in the stores with the manager and none of the watches had this "feature".

Initially, after the third fix, I've asked the watch to be sent to Paris which the Sydney Cartier was confident that it would be unnecessary as the watchmakers in Sydney were highly qualified to fix the issue. But seeing that the Sydney watchmaker has made the verdict that this is not a defect but a "normal" feature I take that to mean that the issue cannot be fixed. So I asked for an exchange seeing that none of the watches have this "normal" feature and since this watch has been pulled apart and reassembled so many times that it is as good as "junk" in my mind. I am sure that no consumer or Cartier staff would buy that watch and think that the crown moving the hand in its locked position is a product that passed the QC.

Anyway, I am to hear a response from Cartier this Tuesday on what the resolution is to be. But I wanted to know if anyone had similar problems with Cartier. I have noticed that Cartier watches/clocks must have issues as the last visit to the store there was another lady who had brought in her clock which keeps breaking down every year.

Thanks for reading this long post. Any similar experiences and outcomes will be welcomed!

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. Quite honestly, I have never heard of issues pertaining to Cartier watches having issues like this before.

I have the Miss Pasha watch, which I purchased in 2014, and around the 2 year mark, I bought it into Cartier for the courtesy maintenance that is recommended for the watch and to this day, it still works perfectly.

I don’t know what to tell you, but I know I would probably raise (polite) hell to them and document everything that happened to your watch in writing during service and demand they stand behind their product.

I regret that this is happening to you. It sounds to me like your watch is a “lemon,” and should be replaced by Cartier. After you’ve exhausted all recourse with them, I suggest you contact your local consumer protection agency to know your rights and Cartier’s responsibility. This situation is really not acceptable, and I hope you get satisfaction soon.
Good luck!

Thank you for responding. I’m glad to hear that none of you have had a negative experience with your watches. I haven’t heard back from Cartier on any decision other than a message from the manager that she will call me tomorrow- a message which I just received half an hour ago. I’ll wait and see what the outcome is.
I am assuming that no one has the same/similar issue with their Cartier watch crown as I am experiencing? So it definitely can’t be normal. I must say that this experience has put me off Cartier products which I’m sure my wallet approves!

Hi all, thanks for your interest in this. I'm glad to say that Cartier decided to replace the watch. Initially, Cartier Sydney wanted to send it to Paris for another review and fix. This was what I originally had asked for in the beginning but that was months ago. When they let me know that it will take over 3 months, I told them I had waited long enough. And since Cartier Sydney insisted that their Sydney watchmakers were as good as the Parisian and Swiss watchmakers then the outcome would be the same. So I asked for a replacement and they agreed. It will take 5 weeks for my watch to arrive though. But I guess that's a shorter wait than 3 months fix in Paris!

I’m glad you got your issue resolved. The frustrating thing about your situation is that the quartz movements cost nearly nothing, and had they replaced it the first time you took your watch in, you’d have gone to less trouble, and they wouldn’t have had to replace your watch.

It depends on whether you have an automatic watch or a quartz watch. Generally, the automatics need to be serviced every 5 years, and the quartz watches will stop every 2-3 years when the battery dies. I don’t service my watches any more frequently than that, and I have not had a problem.

My Tank Francaise is a quartz movement that I've had since 2012 or 2013, and it's been in for servicing three times. The estimate of every 2-3 years seems accurate. No one at Cartier ever suggested a timeline to me. When the battery dies I take it in to a boutique for a new one and serving.
