I want to create more portable sizes of my favorite fragrance and have never done this before . I would welcome any tips, tricks and recommendations for what you used to decant, where to buy , what causes less waste, what to avoid, and what worked best for you. Thanks in advance !! :flowers:

I have not decanted in many years, but I had terrible luck with the little metal funnels. There are bulb headed plastic pipettes? (Like a tiny bulb baster) That worked better for me. This link and others describe some of the process

also, if you are decanting from a factory sealed atomizer, I don’t recommend disabling or trying to remove the spray Mech. ( If you insist on doing so, of course, do not use anything like a sharp knife) Rather, spray a zillion times Into another receptacle, then pour or pipette? The liquid into your vial.

and, leave lots of air room in your travel atomizer (hopefully glass). bc nothing is worse than a perfume accident

Appreciate the info/link. I have no intention of damaging the original perfume bottle, it's engraved. I will spray a zillion times but are there atomizers that take the spray directly avoiding the 2nd step ? Does the repetitive pushing damage the spray nozzle ?

Yes, travel ones where you can spray into. But, spray tends to go everywhere.
don’t think repetitive spraying damages a well built nozzle.

If you can, wait for other TPFers who have more experience decanting :)

good luck!

It has been a long time since I decanted perfumes. When I've decanted before, I preferred using 5 to 10 ml decant bottles, and spraying directly into the decant bottle, over a sink. I have not seen any damage to the nozzles due to repetitive spraying. I did take short breaks while decanting, especially with the larger decants (10 to 15 ml).

However, keep in mind that decants can sometimes evaporate. It's not an issue if you are using them regularly though, since the rate of evaporation is usually quite slow. I have also had some decants that have not evaporated at all, so I am not sure what makes some of them evaporate faster than others. As for bottles, amazon has many options including some decorative ones with metal casing. There was a decant bottle website that was recommended often on the perfume websites and blogs -- I think it was called accessories for fragrance maybe? I have never used them though. I think they might be on ebay too, but not sure about that.

When it comes to decanting, my advice is to always opt for glass bottles – they ensure the fragrance's quality and longevity. Before starting, it's essential to UV sterilize all decanting tools and bottles to maintain hygiene standards. Use a syringe to gently extract the fragrance from the main bottle's nozzle and then transfer it to the smaller decanting bottle, preventing contact with air or bacteria. Now, the crucial part! If you want to extend the shelf life of your fragrance, consider wrapping the bottle neck with 3M laboratory sealing film – this significantly minimizes alcohol evaporation. If you're into DIY decanting, I hope these tips come in handy.

Sometimes, I also purchase samples from reliable websites like branddecant.com(because I cant afford all large perfumes:crybaby:). They even provide video tutorials on decanting, which can be a helpful reference.

I hope these insights are useful to you.

Hi! I travel a lot, and I have tried many options. I will say, there is no perfect solution when decanting. It is more about tradeoffs. Here are the two ways I used to decant...

Small spray bottle:
I decant into this small spray glass bottle. I like that it is a spray bottle. I don't use the atomizer as it doesn't work well. I just spray my perfume directly into the glass jar. It works great.

A big downside to this is that it leaks if you check your luggage, and even sometimes in your carryon. This is due to the air pressure.

If you just want to store this at home, it will be fine and will not leak. Keep in mind though, this is not a tight seal, so you will probably get some evaporation, a bad thing, especially if you have fine perfume.

Small essential oils jar:
This tiny bottle is leakproof and is great if you check in luggage. The downside to this bottle is that it is just a bottle. There is no spray nozzle though. This means your fingers have to touch the bottle which then the perfume now will mix with some of the body oil from your finger, not a good thing. You can also just "shake" the bottle and not touch it with your finger. Drops will come out slowly. The opening is very small so you have to work at it a bit to get the drops out. I got tired of doing that, so I no longer use it. I did want to share this with you in case you prefer a tight seal. I experienced zero leakage with this bottle.

Finally...
I no longer decant as I find it a pain. Plus, I dislike looking at cheap decanted bottles. I prefer to see original packaging. Hence, I find the best solution is to buy travel size versions.

For travel, I bring two perfumes...
Frederic Malle's Carnal Flower - I use this during waking hours
Jo Malone's Red Roses - I use this when I go to bed. I douse this one, like I'm sleeping on a bed of roses! The smell is divine, never overpowering. If you like roses, try this one!

Both come in travel sizes. I love the travel sizes as it is a small spray bottle and there is zero leakage.
Best of all, it puts a smile on my face to see the original packaging. Perfume is for the senses, and that includes the beautiful packaging to me.

If your perfume comes in travel sizes, that would be my first choice.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your detailed reply, @BigAkoya  !! Unfortunately, the perfumes I use don't come in travel/smaller sizes, so I can only decant if I want to take it for travel. I did manage to decant one successfully via a nice atomizer from Amazon. I've also managed to get a sizeable amount of perfume samples of my favs whenever I purchase something else from LV, so I'm using them up as my travel sized minis for now.

I decant my Le Labo fragrances into these atomisers. I like how they have a window on the side, so I can see how much perfume is left. I live between homes at the moment, so these are great for making sure my 100mL bottles are not sitting there collecting dust.
