Any reccomendations for Double Eyelid Surgery?

Hi y'all! I'm a 23 year old female from a south-east Asian background. I had my first double eyelid surgery operation when I was 17 by Dr Andrew Kim in Melbourne, Australia. My initial operation and the subsequent revision surgeries that he preformed were totally botched and I've been left with asymmetry and a deformed fold on my left eye (please refer to the attached photo).

After years of hating my appearance, regretting my decision to ever have the surgery, and completely losing all trust in surgeons, I have finally found the courage to look into possibly undergoing revision surgery.
I was just wondering whether anyone in Australia could recommend an experienced plastic surgeon to me who specialises in double eyelid surgery (also known as asian blepharoplasty). I'm specifically looking for a plastic surgeon, not a cosmetic surgeon (like Dr. Andrew Kim). I'm based in Melbourne, but would be willing to travel interstate for a more experienced and respectable doctor.

Please let me know if you or someone you know has any recommendations for me.

I don't have any recommendations, but I'm sorry to hear about your botched surgeries and the pain they have caused you. I'm also based in Melbourne and had my first eyelid surgery at 17 with Dr Andrew Kim. However, the crease loosened after only six months so I'm looking into revision surgery too. Bumping this thread because I'd also like to know about any Asian blepharoplasty specialists based in Australia! ^^

For future reference, if you want to check if an Australian practitioner is indeed a registered specialist plastic surgeon, you can search their name in the register of practitioners on the AHPRA website and check what kind of registration they have. A practitioner who has undergone the full training to specialise in plastic surgery will have a specialist registration in plastic surgery on this registry. If they only have a general registration (like Dr Andrew Kim), run for the hills lol

You might already know about this, but in any case I hope it helps with your distrust of surgeons knowing that this information is readily available.

Oh WOW I was actually considering him for my initial DES since Im from Melbourne too! Very sorry to hear that he has done a botched job on you :(

I ended up going to Korea but am very unhappy with my results and now want revision as well. I'm open to getting it done in Australia, but more likely to go back to Korea or even China as I feel as though there are not many surgeons in Australia that specialise in asian eyes.
I had a consult at the start of 2018 with Dr Frank Lin. He is located in Box Hill. Not sure about his qualifications but I felt pretty comfortable with him in my consult and he was very informative. However my mom insisted I go to Korea as Korea is well known for all their PS procedures ahhaha also the pricing in Australia is very high.. I was quoted almost 6k AUD for the procedure, and up to 10k if I wanted to do it in a hospital!

Steven Liew from Shape Clinic in Sydney does them, have a look at his website. Dr Ellis Choy from Zilver Lining (also in Sydney) has photos of his work. I've been a patient of Dr Liew for eyelid fillers but not for surgery.

^ I second this - I've been looking at Ellis Choy for a bit now and his work looks amazing. He is $300 for consultation though, but every one after that I think is free (ONLY for cosmetic surgeries). He also has FRACS (Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons), whereas Andrew Kim doesn't.

I was actually keen to go to Andrew Kim as well, but after further research, I found out that he wasn't actually "qualified" for surgery. I don't actually think it's necessary for cosmetic surgeons to have FRACS in Australia, which is why Andrew Kim can continue doing what he does, but I think it's really important to look for FRACS for Australian PS's.

I actually know a few people who got it done in Australia and regret not going to Korea. Understandably there are more risks going there, but might be worth a look...? I've been lurking this forum for a while and decided to make an account to contribute my research. I can let you know what Korean Clinics I'm looking at if you're interested.

Otherwise, Ellis Choy is definitely your best bet here in Australia.

I want a more natural look since my family is really against PS... so kinda doing this behind their backs hahaha but at the same time I don't think my eye shape or my face will suit a more dramatic look.

After reading this forum and watching some Youtube vids, my Top 3 are 1. MVP, 2. ITEM & 3. Teuim (but this is not likely).

1. MVP -
Watched this girl and her results are really nice (you can also find her on IG as well with the same handle as her Youtube)
Dr. Seo seems like the most trustworthy surgeon in Korea for me. I feel like I've seen you post a few times so I think you've been to him for your first one, but are unhappy with your results not (sorry if I've mistaken you for someone else). I feel like although there are some complaints that his results are TOO natural / end up being hooded, I still won't regret it because it won't look botched. I'll probably go to him first for consultation and ask for a higher crease than I want since I know how these results can dramatically change in a few years time.

2. ITEM -
This chick had a good experience there and you can also find her on IG with the same handle as Youtube.
Haven't been in as much depth about the surgeon ETC. for this clinic since I'm pretty set on going to MVP end of the year, but I will do more then.

3. Teuim
Purely from this forum, the results look great BUT the recovery apparently is really long.

Obviously these are just my opinions, but please look into the Top 2 because I honestly think those are THE places to go. I am still scared about ghost doctors and just having surgery overseas, but after intense research of Korean PS, I'm probably just going to go when I visit.

Hey! Thanks for the really informative reply! Yes I went to MVP last November and I can say that Dr Seo is exceptionally good at VERY natural and conservative creases so if you are going for natural, MVP is a very good option for you! His stitchwork is very well done and mvp has good aftercare as well. Unfortunately I was looking for a more dramatic change though so I think I made a big mistake choosing a doctor who is famous for natural looks.

I will look more into Item! Teium is unfortunately super expensive and out of my budget :(

Oh wow thank you so much for all the recommendations, Girls! I will definitely book in a consultation to see Dr Steven Liew and Dr Ellis Choy for the next time I'm in Sydney. Dr Choy in particular looks great! And I was actually considering going to South Korea for alarplasty and bulbous nose reduction in the future. I just don't have the means to do it right now, unfortunately.

For anyone considering undergoing surgery with Dr Andrew Kim, I highly recommend that you re-consider. I'm not sure how he is with rhinoplasty, but for double eyelid surgery, he did a really bad job with both my sister and my eyes. From memory, I spent approximately $9500 all up for epicanthoplasty, lateral canthoplasty, the double eyelid surgery, and the first revision (which was another $1000). He thankfully didn't charge me for the second revision, but both revision surgeries were preformed within 2-3 weeks of the previous operation, which I have now found out to be way too soon to do any kind of proper revision work. I'm pretty sure he just recommended doing the operations so soon because he wanted to get my case over and done with.

In my experience with Dr Kim, I felt as though he wasn't a very empathetic or caring doctor at all. He'll happily do the operations, but if you return with complications, he'll treat you like a huge inconvenience. Please think twice before seeing him! And if you do go see him, and get the feeling at the first consultation that he's not that great (like I did), don't ignore it just because he's appeared on SBS Insight etc. You can watch his most recent guest appearance on SBS here - it's evident he just agreed to be featured on the show to boost his profile, not because he has any grand expertise or experience in the area: https://www.sbs.com.au/news/insight/tvepisode/picture-perfect

I know this is pretty late but i also wanted to add that i too had a botched double eyelid surgery with Dr Andrew Kim in 2013 at his Melbourne office. I now Dont have double eyelids when i open my eyes and when they are half closed you can see TWO crease on the left eye and a deep sunken crease with uneven skin on the right eye. Dr kim also did a revision on my right eye which didn’t really help. I want to warn everyone out there that is thinking to go to Dr A.Kim for the double eyelid surgery to PLEASE RECONSIDER! Just because he is korean and worked there doesn’t mean he is good at double eyelid surgery. As korea is the capital of double eyelid surgery, I assumed he was experienced at double eyelid surgery and would understand the asian eyes better. I regret it so much that I didn’t do my research on him first. I also found him not that understanding and caring. It now takes me twice as long to apply eye make up to cover the flaws Dr Kim has created. I can only use black eye shadow as the light colours wont cover the botched creases.
I too am looking to find a good surgeon to revise my eyes but am worried it will become even worse.

Sorry to read what you have gone through. Really feel for you. How are you going with your research for a eyelid revision? I’m currently considering a revision as well. I live in Melbourne. I assume you are from Melbourne as well since you went with Dr Andrew Kim?
