Any good jewellery to buy from India?

Their gold work is amazing! Of course, you have to like 22k gold. I got some beautiful pieces, earrings and necklace, while I was in Kolkata. It's great because they charge you by the weight of the gold and not the craftsmanship.

Firstly, you will not get certified stones, and pearls are mostly freshwater. I haven't seen any shop selling Tahitian/ SS pearls. Most jewellers does not provide certificates for diamonds too, and details of the cut is not disclosed. However, if you are interested, there is a certain style of diamond setting in 22k gold called polki (do not confuse with the kundan style, which is basically colored glass), which are uncut diamonds and they are very pretty. Indian jewellery is mostly heavy gold filigree work.

Hi

You will find amazing quality 22 carat gold jewellery for very good price. Make sure you buy from a good retailer.

I suggest you to go to Tanishq (it is a company owned by TATA)

They give you authenticuty certificate on every purchase plus designs are amazing.

Check tanishq.co.in for reference

I don't know Pune, I know Kolkatta. I like the Jaipur enamel work. You can get that throughout India.

You can find refreshing diamond designs from the chain stores mentioned in the above posts. Much better than the mass produced stuff in the USA. A chain store will be trustworthy.

If you do pass through Kolkatta check out Walter's for diamonds and Oriental Gems (both at Oberoi hotel). Both have excellent reputations and have served generations of customers.

PBI: Why is it advised to not purchased colored stones/pearls/diamonds?

One thing I can say for sure is do not shop for rubies - or at least don't pay ruby prices. It may look like rubies are everywhere but they aren't ruby - they are spinel or some such stone. Same for emerald and sapphire. You'll probably see lots of strands of cut beads (see pic below). They are pretty but do not believe the seller if he claims they are ruby, sapphire or emerald. You can do a google search to get an idea of prices.

You can get genuine, natural sapphire and emerald but at reputable shops. I've bought gorgeous colored stone earrings in India from a known jeweler who was recommended by a family friends.

Be aware that man-made ruby and emerald are becoming so well made that you might need a gemologist to tell the difference. Man made emeralds even have the impurities that are characteristic of natural stones.

India's gold is definitely one of the best! I suggest getting just gold jewelry without stones too. It's better as an investment as well. Whenever my mom goes to India she always buys gold jewelry without the stones and kundan etc. it's just better in the long run if you ever think of selling it. Amrapali is a different story though. They are pretty legit. But if you're going to the more local showrooms then only 22k gold without the colored stones is your best bet.

Thank you for mentioning those bead necklaces are spinel and the fake emeralds. I bought emerald earrings that were later appraised to be super fakes. I knew the shop so they immediately refunded me. In fairness they themselves didn’t realize the emeralds were fake.

Since the price of gold has gone up I no longer buy gold jewelry in India. It all looks the same. For the price I can get something smaller but fabulous workmanship and design from Italy. Italian designers offer many shades of gold - India only has that harsh saturated yellow that doesn’t work on a lot of skin tones.
