An "adjustment period" carrying a new bag? Anybody experience this?

Every time I get a new bag, I move my stuff right in, and I start carrying it right away. However, I find that in the first week of carrying it, my arm or shoulder feels a bit sore due to the difference in weight or weight distribution from the bag I was carrying previously. Does anyone else have that problem? It seems to happen to me every time, but I can never stop worrying that ultimately the bag will be too heavy or uncomfortable for me to carry long term during that first week.

I have adjustment periods with some bags, but not all. Most of my adjustment is in my head, though, and not so much an issue of causing me pain. I worry that the bag just doesn't feel right, is going to slip off my shoulder, doesn't hold my things properly, etc. etc. It usually takes me about a week to ten days to get "broken in" with a new bag. I think it's just a result of being an OCD kind of person - change isn't easy!

Ditto and ditto! :)

I carry so many things that in the first 10 days....I always think that I have made a mistake......and that the bag is much too heavy as usual....and sometimes it is true.:sweatdrop:
It's difficult to know whether the bag is really heavy when you try it on in a store.I would like to be like some women I know . They carry small purses with very few things inside but I would feel very insecure if I didn't have all my numerous essentials....:panic:

If it's a radically different style/weight I would - but normally I buy the same sort of bags, just in different brands/colours so it's not a big difference. I've been carrying LV Speedy and similar styles and want to get a MK tote for summer which I expect will be an adjustment. I looked at them yesterday but couldn't decide which colour I wanted, but I think I'm going to go back and get the aqua.

After I buy it takes me ages to 'move in'. Maybe part of that is I have to adjust to it in my head first. The more expensive the bag and/or different the style, the more time it takes to adjust LOL.

However, I'm usually the type of person that changes my bag for different functions too, so nothing has to be a longterm disaster.

I move in right away. Its kind of ceremonial -- I pour a glass of wine, make sure I have a bit of time (if I don't have time, I wait until I do...). I choose the right wallet (from the drawer full of multiples...) then re-organize my things into the new bag. I go through every pocket and compartment, try different setups, think of where I will reach for things - think of how something was <here> in my last bag so I will look for it <there> in the new one.

I try wearing it different ways, with different outfits (and coats), with different amounts of stuff inside - to see how it drapes... what it can handle. The bag and i get to know each other - what do I expect from it, and what does it deliver? (as in: oh if I pack you *this* way, you can do *that*! Cool...).

After this little getting-to-know-you cocktail hour, I take it out to road-test for different uses -- work, weekend, evening. By then, we're acquainted and we can get on with it!

It sounds all boring and OCD all at once - yet it is deliciously fun - one of my favorite things to do. Thus continues the allure of each next new bag!

I do go through an adjustment period, getting used to wearing the bag, handling it, where to place it when I sit down or at the washroom. Even my colleagues also go through the adjustment of seeing me wearing a new bag!

I did end up getting the aqua MK and then immediately took it on a two week road trip vacation - after a day or two I was missing my lighter bags as it was very heavy (leather vs the coated canvas I usually buy, plus extra contents because I was on vacation). By the time I got home I was used to it and carried it for the next couple of months - when I went back to my Speedy it felt very light!

Ahh I'm hoping this is the case for me. I purchased an MJ handbag that has grommets all over it and although I checked the weight first, I was surprised by how heavy it is (not to mention huge). I hope I can break it in!
