I emailed to a local jeweler to get some simple gold pieces made (letter charms, hoops, etc.). He quoted them and I went in to look at examples and sizes. He then left in the middle of the appt for a highroller and passed me off to someone else. He apologized 3 times, but he hasn't followed up or anything since then. Am I taking it personally or is this bad service? I wondered if it was since I was purchasing low cost items, or maybe because I'm young is why he didn't take me seriously in person.

This is my first time buying custom jewelry, so I wanted to get a 2nd opinion.

TIA!

My husband and I have a jeweler that custom makes a lot of jewelry for me. This past year we spent a considerable amount with him - got my E-ring, two wedding bands, tennis bracelet, diamond studs, some necklaces, etc. At least half of the times we have gone in (and with an appointment), the jeweler starts by helping us out, then he would pass us over to his sister or another associate when another client would come in.

So, it's hard to say if the jeweler was being rude to you without actually being there... but if his apologies sounded sincere, he was likely just trying to juggle several customers at once and trying to capitalize on making money.

I would try not to take it too personal. And if you honestly felt the service was terrible - I agree with the previous poster, and just contact another jeweler for your needs

I don't think you are being dramatic at all. I know sometimes unexpected VIP's come in, and it becomes a conflict of interest for the business owner or SA. Not everyone knows how to finesse a situation like this.
Even though you may not be spending a huge amount "at this point" you should be shown the same appreciation as a high roller. The jeweller can't predict how good a client you may be in the future, as you may end up being an even bigger high roller.
It's good he at least apologized several times.

It's one of those times when you have to go with your gut. Do you feel you can forgive this lack of attention to you, and give him another chance?

It's also probably a good idea to visit another jeweller for a quote.
This way you can compare both the service you receive and see how close the quotes are. This is a good time to learn to comparison shop, and hopefully find a jeweller you can trust and build a relationship with, should you ever need small repairs or larger purchases.

Thanks for the quick replies! It was a very busy day, so I'm going to give them a second chance as they are the highest reviewed in town. But, if I still feel like they're not being attentive enough, I will just take my business elsewhere. I want to build a relationship with a jeweler for years to come, and I just want to make sure I feel like a valued client.

Do you have to get simple pieces like these custom made? I’d rather not deal with a custom order and the possibility of not liking the final result/being unable to return etc. Hoops and letter charms are everywhere. Your jeweler is probably just ordering the stuff from jewelry suppliers like stuller anyway and not really custom making it.
