Alexander Skarsgard Plays a Vampire Again on What We Do in the Shadows — Hear Him Explain His Cameo

Alexander Skarsgard just sunk his teeth into another TV vampire role.
The True Blood alum made a surprise appearance in Monday’s episode of the FX vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows, appearing at a celebration for head vampire Baron Afanas, played by Doug Jones. The Baron announced his intentions to take over the new world, and when one woman tried to ask him a question, Laszlo’s brutish monster smashed her skull to bloody bits. So when the Baron asked if there were any more questions, the camera cut to Skarsgard sheepishly putting his hand down: “I thought I had a question, but then you answered it.”
Skarsgard’s character was never named, but Shadows has a tradition of bringing back famous vampires from movies and TV shows. In seasons past, Wesley Snipes (Blade), Evan Rachel Wood (True Blood), Paul Reubens (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Danny Trejo (From Dusk Till Dawn) have made cameo appearances, among others. Skarsgard, of course, played vampire Eric Northman in all seven seasons of the HBO supernatural drama True Blood, which aired from 2008 to 2014.
Skarsgard offered a cheeky explanation for his Shadows cameo in a statement: “I’m afraid I have no recollection of shooting this episode as Dr. Laszlo Cravensworth apparently hypnotized me at the wrap party. But I did wake up with an intense physical attraction to Dr. Cravensworth and found his extraordinary wit, charm and intelligence absolutely disarming. The sixth and final season of What We Do in the Shadows airs Mondays at 10/9c on FX.

FX’s What We Do In The Shadows featured Alexander Skarsgard in tonight’s episode “Come Out and Play.” He was dressed in all black and wore vampire fangs, much like his True Blood character Eric Northam did across the HBO show’s 7 seasons.

What We Do in the Shadows' final season features a major True Blood cameo, and one of the stars breaks down how it happened...
In an interview with Screen Rant, Jones, who plays the narcissistic and ancient vampire Baron Afanas, shared his excitement about Alexander Skarsgård’s surprise appearance in episode 9 of the FX comedy's final season. Skarsgård, known for his brooding role as the vampire Eric Northman in HBO's fantasy drama series True Blood, appeared among the New York vampires summoned by the Baron, making for a brief comedic moment. Here's what Jones had to say about that day on set:
Yeah, I have been a fan of the entire Skarsgård family forever. So, with Alexander, it was like, ‘Oh, I've never met him before,’ and I was tickled pink that we were going to get a pretty stormy vampire to show up in our goofy comedy show. ‘Perfect, this is great.’
And when he walked onto the set, he was, like, 6'5", he's a little taller than me, and strappingly handsome, and everybody's going like, ‘[In awe] Oh.’ But he pulled the funny out in a way that we did not expect, I didn't expect. So, getting to banter back and forth with him was delicious for me.
And they encouraged all of us to go off script, so when you throw in bits and asides that are working are funny, and he was full of them. I don't know that it all made it to the screen, what he threw in there, but it was all very funny. And we had an arena full of background actors that all knew who he was.
And no one, from that crowd, knew he was coming that day. Everyone was so excited to have him.
