Hi all. I know it's ultimately a personal and subjective decision but I would be really interested to hear any opinions.

I have a c. 11 year old beautiful 226 Reissue in ivory with gold hardware. It barely looks used, purchased pre loved a few years ago.

I know that vintage (i.e. gold plated vintage) has become super popular in recent times and I'm finding myself swept up in that trend. I love the look and already own 2 other vintage chanels (the mademoiselle vintage jumbo with the oversized CCs in black caviar, and a 1997-1999 small brown lambskin CF with 24k gh - my most used chanel). I also have two other non-vintage pieces: a lambskin pale pink woc and a green medium gh lambskin CF, both 5 - 10 years old.

I was considering selling my reissue to fund a 1998 black caviar jumbo single flap gold hardware with the small CC (not the oversized cc version). I still love the look of the reissue and I think it looks more feminine on, but just find myself reaching for the vintage CC flaps over the reissue every time. If it were you, would you make the trade?
Pros: Love the vintage CC, might be able to sell the reissue for a little more than the cost of the vintage jumbo so won't lose money (hopefully), don't reach for the reissue for some reason.
Cons: Reissue is newer, in better condition, I already have a black caviar vintage jumbo with the large CC, so it's a less diverse collection. Does one really need two vintage black caviar jumbos(!). Also selling is a pain.

IMO only, as a lambskin and aged calf and reissue lover, I would never sell a reissue (esp. in a shade like ivory) to fund a caviar classic cc with smaller clasp (to my aesthetic, the caviar with smaller clasp is less rich looking; less unusual; and slightly more conservative than classic in style. The black caviar classic cc is relatively easy to find, albeit at n ever increasing price. In addition, it took decades, but I am suddenly enamored of light colored bags (my craie mini Della cavalleria). But, I am sure that my preference for non caviar reissue over caviar cc is the minority opinion on TPF.

Other arguments to keep might include IDK if you will be able to sell the reissue for more than the cost of a vintage jumbo caviar cc which is still a more popular bag. In general, as you know, the reissue doesn’t hold value as well as any classic cc. Seller remorse is another reason. . . I rehomed many chanel bags around 2008 bc I was convinced that going forward I would only wear Hermes. But, now, even though I rarely reach for any chanel bag, I bought an so black mini reissue in 2020 and a micro stingray boy ont he secondary market that I missed at the boutique.

Taste does change and I find myself regretting that I rehomed a mini belt bag (a tiny micro cc bag on a chain) that was one of my first bags, a gift from my mom in 1990. I did so bc I was convinced that I would nver wear it lol I am not a minimalist and I have always regretted any time in my life where I have tried to subscribe to the notion Of one in, one out. So I would always prefer to save for the next.

BUT, indications to sell are sprinkled throughout your post. . It does sound like you are a classic cc person and not a reissue person, and as your polar opposite, I can definitively say, I did know in my heart of hearts that I did not want to wear any of my older classic cc bags again. I will also say that it sounds like your cc preference may outweigh the need for diversity in style, esp bc you already have a lighter color chanel in the collection. Your most used chanel is not black but it is a classic cc. It’s possible that you might wear an ivory classic flap more than the reissue, And could simply buy one of those in the future.

The main thing is the heart wants what it wants, and of course you can have two black caviar bags with GHW.
And, it really doesn’t matter if you have a less diverse collection, if you know you will never reach for the outlier bag

As you said the decision is subjective and personal, and there is no clear right or wrong. so follow your heart

This is such an incredibly helpful reply, thank you for your considered reasons you have given me much to ponder :)

Let me put out there that I own and love a jumbo, but in lamb and silver hardware. I think the combo of caviar- quilts-GHW is grannyish, but particularly with the smaller CC. I love your current vintage black flap. Whether you keep or sell the ivory, I would not get the bag you posted.

I’m grateful for these opinions - very interesting and helpful to get perspectives on the small cc jumbo. Inspired by some reissue loving contributors I took my ivory 226 for a spin today and was reminded of why I fell in love with it and aged calfskin in the first place. The colour is full of creamy goodness, it sits very well as a double chain shoulder bag and it really is very versatile as I have many occasions where a cc turnlock would not work. Here she is on me today at work. She’ll stay in my collection for now - thank you all!

Love! You look amazing :drinks:
The classic black, small cc, GHW that @heatherB calls grannyish, I call conservative; perhaps a function of my age

Your reissue is amazing. And you look amazing wearing it as well. I’m glad you haven’t decided to sell!

No offense intended, of course. I think it comes down to overall look with one’s wardrobe, etc. I think, with how I dress, that combo looks like I borrowed a classy older lady’s bag. It doesn’t necessarily look like that on others.

Do you love your vintage mademoiselle with large CC? I am ready to purchase one but debating between lambskin or caviar....thoughts?
