When my mother passed away 8 years ago, I inherited her small jewelry collection. Included in this collection are 2 diamonds - one is pear shaped, and the other is round. I'm ready to have a diamond necklace in my jewelry rotation, so I'm hoping you girls can help me out!

Today I went to a jeweler to see if the diamonds are worth getting appraised. She said my pear is definitely worth getting appraised and insured, but that my mom was a bit hard on the round diamond because it's chipped and not in terrific condition. Once the pear appraisal is done (made an appointment for next Tuesday), I'd like to get it reset.

This stone was my mother's engagement ring and she had it turned into a pendant when my parents divorced. I asked my dad if he remembers any information about the diamond. The one thing he seems convinced of is that it's 2.3 carats. He says that my grandpa's good friend was a jeweler, and that the man came over to their house, laid out 4 diamonds, and my dad chose which one he wanted. I'm hoping he did a tiny amount of research about diamond quality before making his selection!

I'd like the setting to be pretty simple. Any ideas? Is there a standard setting for pears? I'll post pictures of both diamonds later tonight.

Thanks for any advice :smile1:

I'm still wiping the drool from seeing surfergirl jens bezel pear pendant!.... So I think you know where my vote is! Lol

Yellow or white gold, depending on your preference.

Ok, so i got the appraisal done today. The diamond is 1.94 carats, G color, and SI1 clarity. The woman said that the diamond is clear, but due to a slight abrasion on the tip, the clarity level dips a little.

So, now I get to choose a setting! She showed me two different options.
1. A white gold bezel around the diamond
2. Two prongs on the side, one on the tip, and what she called "rabbit ears"

I'm including pictures of these styles. The best bezel pic I found is in a ring setting, but I figure you can still get the idea. While I was googling pics, I came across another style (the 3rd pic), which I think I like the most.

The bezel will provide the most protection for the diamond, but I feel like the white gold kinda cheapens the look. Am I crazy for thinking that? Which setting do you like the most? Other ideas? TIA! :smile1:

all these pear shaped solitaires are killing me lately:drool: I think you should bezel the diamond in white gold or platinum, the bezel will also help cover up the tiny abrasion on the tip of the diamond.
