Hello,

I am hoping our dear tpf ladies in this section of the forum will help me with my jewelry gift buying. I must say, I am a purse/shoe girl, and when it comes to jewelry I have very little experience and tend to wear very little as well.

I would like to buy a gift for my mom. She likes yellow gold, and we decided to get her a nice yellow gold necklace in the price range up to $1,500. She is also not a big fan of jewelry, so it probably won't be something with diamonds, pearls, etc, because I am not sure she will like that.

Anyway, so far I have been to a few local jewelry shops. One suggestion they made was a 14K yellow gold omega dome necklace 6mm (all this memorized but I must admit I heard of most of these terms for the first time) for about $1,000. I haven't decided on that one yet, and wanted to get a few more options before buying.

I don't want to buy online, I have the option to also go to brand names such as Tiffany&Co, Cartier, etc. But like I said, very little experience with jewelry so not sure what would be the best thing to get her.

Any advice from you is greatly appreciated.

Omegas are a really beautiful item, but if you are buying one these days, PLEASE ask and make sure that it is not 1. hollow or 2. filled with silicone.
I have an 8mm omega that I purchased nearly 10 years ago and it was nearly $1000 at that time. It has a 14k mesh core with the outside gold wrapped around it. If they can't answer your questions, pass on it.
It doesn't mean the jeweler is not a good one, but with the high price of gold now, manufacturers are trying to come with ways to get a big look for a smaller price.

Ha...I just noticed that I am wearing my omega in my avatar. LOL...I love it!

I guess the best word to describe her would be traditional. She wouldn't like contemporary pieces. Probably of the 3 suggested, she would be the person to wear the 1837 interlocking circles. I guess in my mind I am thinking something that will last a long time, and can be worn as an everyday jewelry or dress it up and wear it when she goes somewhere for a special occasion. Its her 50th birthday and I would like to buy her something special.

Those 3 are also very nice. Another question, I did some research about yellow gold on my own, read about different karats, if I wanted something thats good quality, would I go for 18K or 14K? Read somewhere that 14K is not such a good quality as 18.

IMHO both are fine. Personally, I prefer 18K gold because there is more pure gold (75% pure gold vs. 58.5% pure gold). Also, many of the high end jewelers prefer 18K yellow gold over 14K gold.

I agree with AntiqueShopper above re: 18k over 14k, and want to add that 18K yellow gold looks more "yellow" and richer to me especially as it ages. I love Tiffany's pieces...you can also get her the love pendant from Cartier (resembles Tiffany interlocking circles pendant) but some ladies prefer that over Tiffany.

Wonderful suggestions! I always wanted an omega necklace. Thanks for the info, Kits, I'll remember that! What I like about the omega is the fact you can add an enhancer and change the look totally.
I also love the Tiffany 1837 Interlocking Circles...good choice, AS!
What a lovely thought, Pursissima...

Thank you so much. I learned a lot from you today. I think my next step will be to go to Tiffanys and also find a place that sells Mikimoto pieces, since I've never heard of the brand until nvie mentioned it.

I will keep you posted on what I find in the next few days.

Found out that there is no Mikimoto stores in my area, but there is a CD Peacock store that is supposed to be selling this brand. Never shopped at this store before, so wanted to get your opinion on this store.
