I am obsessed with matte black/black on black bags, but haven't yet purchased on yet and would love to hear your thoughts!

I was considering the ultra matte black Lady Dior, but I don't think the Lady Dior is a great bag for me in general. Short should is my preferred carry method, which isn't an option with the Lady Dior. Also, none of the sizes of the Lady Dior quite work for me. And I looked at other ultra matte black Dior bags, but again, none of the sizes of the other options really work for me. So, as gorgeous as I think the ultra matte black Lady Dior and other Dior bags are, I don't think it's quite right.

The black YSL LouLou with black hardware in the medius size was my first love, and it's still a top contender. What is stopping me though is that middle zip compartment in the LouLou. I kind of hate middle zip compartments like that as I have no use for them and I find they just eat into the usable capacity of a bag. I've also considered the puffer version. I do like it, and it doesn't have a middle zip compartment, but I'm not sure I like it as much as the regular LouLou, and I also feel like it's not as classic or versatile as the regular LouLou. The other one I've considered is the tri-quilt envelope bag, but that one seems SO stiff/structured and as a result, seems like the capacity is actually quite limited.

And then, I start thinking about all of the concerns around black hardware chipping. This is a huge concern of mine as well, and another reason I haven't made the plunge yet (other than my massive indecisiveness). Does it makes sense to spend thousands on a bag when I'm so concerned about chipping hardware? I get that with black hardware, chipping/rubbing is always going to be an issue and basically seems like an inevitable thing that will happen. I still LOVE the look though and feel like the desire for a black on black bag isn't going to leave me. So, maybe I should stick with a more contemporary brand?

To that end, I've also been seriously considering the Tory Burch Fleming in the matte black. I actually didn't consider it for the longest time because it's rubberized PU, not leather, but with the current state of things, I actually feel like the bag not being leather is kind of appealing. I also do like how very matte this bag looks, which I actually think is, in part, due to the fact that it's not leather. I'm also going to be a new mother in a few months, and kind of wonder if a non-leather bag might be an asset for this new phase of life. But yet, there is still a part of me that DOES want it to be leather, even though I can see all the benefits of non leather.

I've also considered a variety of Rebecca Minkoff black bags with black hardware - she has a few. But, several of Rebecca Minkoff bags look too obviously like dupes/inspired by bags to me, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. For example, I feel like if I were to get the Minkoff Edie bag with black hardware, I would really just want the YSL LouLou instead.

I think I'm really between the YSL LouLou and the Tory Burch Fleming right now, but I can't make a decision, and I'm still open to any other options. Part of me feels like I should just go for the YSL as it was the first one I fell in love with. Aesthetically, from the outside, it's just pure love for me. But I don't know if it makes sense to spend $2000+ on a bag when I know I don't love the layout and I have such concerns about the hardware chipping (even though the black hardware is the thing I'm after). Between my concerns about the layout and chipping hardware, I fear that I won't actually use the bag all that much, and that's a lot of money to spend for something that won't get adequately used. The Tory Burch is much lower priced, I know I like the layout and functionality of the bag because I previously had one (only sold because of the color), but the non-leather thing still give me a bit of pause (even though I really do think there are great benefits to it not being leather as well) and I kind of worry that I will still want the YSL even if I get the Tory Burch.

So, all this being said, any thoughts or guidance on what bag I should go for OR any others to consider? My big thing is that I very much want black, not gunmetal, hardware. I'm not super interested in Chanel So Black options right now for various reasons. I've also looked at options from Stella McCarteney, Mulberry, and Ferragamo, which are also in the back of my mind. I've wanted a black on black bag for quite some time now, and I really want to purchase one - I just don't know what to do! :confused1:

You might consider the Delvaux Tempête MM in all black crispy calf.
The crispy calf veining really is the star of this bag.
As for chipping, rubbing hardware, it will happen with all-black bags. My advice is to wear and enjoy, and pick a company with good after-sales service for any issues. My Delvaux all-black still looks perfect after about 6 months of use, but I’m gentle on my bags, and don’t carry it every day.
Good luck with your choice!

What a beautiful bag! Thanks for sharing, and I'm happy to hear your's still looks great!

I got the Saint Laurent small Loulou about 4 months ago. It's black with black hardware since I really love the monochrome look. I was worried about the chipping at first, but nothing has happened to it so far. I don't baby my bags much, either. I posted some pictures on this thread, #11. If you love it and can't stop thinking about it, get it.

I have 3 black on black bags! (pic included. Ignore the C tote. Lol!) BABCDEC0-A720-4B77-83A8-7E0A55874C70.jpegI’m very gentle with my bags but because I love the look of them (blk on blk is the ultimate stylish neutral), they get quite a bit of wear.

My oldest (6 years) is the Saint Laurent So Black Mono Cabas. This is a major professional workhorse for me and it still looks pristine.

My second is a Dior Diorama studded WOC. I loooooooove this bag so it’s also gotten quite a bit of wear. I just noticed that there is chipping on one of the studs. They are so tiny that the chip is smaller than a pinhead. So, I’m going to do the unthinkable and touch up the paint myself. I’m very good at small detailed painting so no one will ever know. :graucho:

The third is a YSL Lou Camera bag that is 15 months old. Poor baby came in and became my Covid knock about bag. Unlike my normal careful wear, she’s gotten no respect - thrown in carts and cars, smushed under packages and even rubbed down with sanitizing wipes. And you know what, the bag looks pristine! I don’t know how. Not even a weird wrinkle or scratch. :shrugs:

So, I would vote definitely buy the one you love that will function for you well. I have been very pleasantly surprised by how beautiful and functional these bags are. (I’m super tempted by the matte black LD too!)

Mulberry have the reissue of the Alexa in black on black. I am getting one for my birthday. My original Alexa was the best workhorse bag I’ve ever had.

Hi everyone,

I also have a question regarding the Dior matte black hardware. I haven’t used my bag very often yet, but somehow, maybe from touching or maybe accidentally gently rubbing it against some surface, there’s a darker patch on it and also towards the smaller end of the D. In regular light they appear darker and in bright light the reflect lighter than the rest of the hardware. i tried to gently clean it with some mild detergent but it doesn’t affect the patch in any way. Is there a way to get rid of this? I assume preventing it would require it to stay in the wardrobe which of course is not the idea of a bag.

Looking forward to your reply and merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!
I suggest to post your enquiry in the Dior subforum, some pictures would help the members there to give you an answer.
As an alternative, I would ask Dior boutique send them an email.
