My mom's birthday is coming up. She recently purchased good-sized diamond earrings because, in her opinion, a woman her age should have the "real thing" (I had suggested moisanite or a simulant, since she balked about the price).

However, she usually wears white pearl stud earrings instead. They are poor quality with next to no luster. I happen to be of the opinion that if a woman her age needs real diamonds, then she needs a good quality pair of pearl earrings, too, so I am going to buy them for her.

Would you go with AA quality 8.0-9.0 mm South Sea pearls or 7.0-7.5 mm hanadama pearls? I realize the luster is different between the two, but which might look more classic and appeal to an older woman?

I got a pair of 8-9mm South Sea studs and couldn't be happier with them.

That said, I'm not yet 30 and I find this size quite substantial. I've very long hair and they still stand out. I don't think I would go any larger than this for studs personally.

Smaller akoyas would be a slightly more classic look, imo.

Have you considered Mikimoto? I know there is a mark-up because of branding, but the pearls are so beautiful. When I put my studs against other pearls, my Mikomotos just have an otherworldly glow that is simply stunning.

What a sweetie you are for thinking of her!

Sizewise, take into consideration the size of her earlobes :) I hate seeing women with small ears and HUGE Pearl studs that look like they're hanging on for dear life, kwim?

I think she either choice would actually be great- does she prefer the more metallic luster of an akoya or the inner glow of a SS Pearl...?

For brand, I'm really of the belief that mikimotos are overrated - no offense to those who love mikis. I myself have some, but I find very very good quality non branded pearls have the same. Beauty as mikimotos. Sometimes they even surpass them, IMO...

I'd go with the smaller size, personally. I have a very large South Sea pair, and I find myself wearing them only on special occasions. The smaller Akoya studs are more practical for me.

and how nice of you to treat your mom.
