Over a year ago I bought a can of Apple Garde spray to protect bags against water damage but I’ve hesitated to use it. I was worried about hurting the bags and also concerned because I have allergies and aerosol products often bother me. I once had a very bad reaction to Febreeze!

But the location of my job recently changed and I am now using public transportation for my commute, so I’ve started spraying my bags with Apple Garde and I am very glad that I did! In fact, I’ve used up the first can and had to run out to get some more!

I’ve been taking the bags outside to spray them to provide good ventilation (thanks to some great advice provided by Bunnymasseuse!) So far it hasn’t hurt any of the bags and I haven’t had any problems with allergies, either.

A violent storm hit the Chicago-area very suddenly and unexpectedly last Monday morning. In fact, my house was without power for 3 days and a large, healthy tree in our backyard actually snapped off and landed on our roof and the neighbor’s garage! We finally got the power back yesterday and the tree was removed this morning. There is some damage to both roofs and the insurance adjustor is coming tomorrow!

I’ve always babied my bags so I’ve tried to plan carefully for my new commute. I’ve been carrying a large, plastic drawstring bag in my purse, just in case I needed to get my bag quickly under cover. I have also been carrying an umbrella and a rain poncho in my briefcase. I figured that I was well-protected, but I didn’t expect to need these items while I was still indoors!

The train platforms at Union Station are under a large garage roof but they are actually just inside big, long tubes that are wide-open at one end to let the trains travel in and out. Monday morning I had just gotten off the train and was moving with the crowd along the platform when the storm suddenly hit. We were immediately blasted with high winds and I could feel my body being pelted with water, dirt, sand, and grit! I actually saw the wind rip a pair of eyeglasses off of a man’s face before they disappeared down the tunnel! I quickly ducked behind a pillar but the damage had already been done.

As soon as I got inside the station I ran into the lavatory and was horrified to see that I was a filthy mess! But the thing that upset me the most was that my beautiful, beloved, light-colored Bonnie convertible straw tote had been splashed with dirty water and actually had large pieces of mud and gunk stuck all over her! :shucks:

I looked just as bad as she did but I have my priorities in order, so I took care of Bonnie’s needs first! I was so relieved because all the muck just disappeared as soon as I gently sponged her surface with a water-dampened wad of toilet paper! Almost immediately she looked just as good as new and she dried quickly without showing any spots or signs of damage. :happydance:

I wasn’t as fortunate, but I did what I could to repair my hair and makeup and clean the dirt off my clothes. I kept Bonnie securely under my poncho and cowered under my umbrella for the walk to the office. I put my blazer in the drawstring bag for the trip because it was soaked, and I had to repeat “my toilette” when I finally got to work.

I looked like a mess all day but I am happy to report that Bonnie still looks pristine! I am thrilled that I took the wise advice of fellow TPFers and sprayed her with Apple Garde; it’s my new favorite product!

Wow-- that's a very harrowing bag story. I agree that Apple Garde is invaluable-- I've gone through many, many cans, and actually renew the coverage on my bags from time to time (just in case). So far, I've had no trouble with staining from water, etc.

Glad it all turned out ok!

I was just about how often I should renew applications of Apple Garde, does anyone have a suggestion? TIA!

Glad Bonnie is okay! I have been on tpf so long and should know this but where do you buy Apple garde?

I get it at the Burlington Coat Factory store for $5 but you can also find it online. Do a search on TPF and you will find more information.

I just bought some at the BCF the other day. I found it on a display rack in the shoe department, but sometimes I find it and other leather-care products (like Apple Conditioner) back by the leather jackets and coats. You have to hunt for it.

Thanks a lot, Katev! I will get some:smile1:

Glad to hear you and your Hubby are okay with the tree down on your house. Winds ripped through here at 75 miles an hour. Nothing down and power still up and running. We were lucky.
