Additional leather questions...scratch and water resistance...

Hi all. I am working on my "list" after reviewing HG's amazing leather book...

I am interested in resilience of the various leathers. Would appreciate your feedback in terms of rankings below (based on what I have gathered from reading). Please help me adjust order as needed... :flowers:

Most to least scratch resistant:
Fjord (also heaviest)
Togo, Clemence (soft leathers)
Chevre (lightweight)
Swift
Vache Liegee
Barenia
Evergrain (embossed evercalf), Epsom (embossed, lightweight)
Chamonix (matte)
Evercalf (similar to box, softer feel), Box (glossy)


Most to least water resistant:
Fjord, Ostrich
Epsom
Togo, Clemence, Chevre, Vache Liegee, Swift (wipe down after rain)
Barenia
Box
Chamonix
Croc

Wow! Good work SoCal!

My only question is isn't Vachee Liagee is supposed to be right up there with togo and fjord as far as scratch resistance and durability? More so than Swift I think???

Sounds right to me. I can vouch for Clemence not scartching easily. When we were walking around SF DH and I kept bumping into each other and his watch kept hitting my Evelyne. No scartches whatsoever were left. Thank goodness! :lol:

Agreed. I'd also like to add that Barenia is just slightly above box in scratch resistance but the scratches can be rubbed out. I am rubbing my Barenia every half an hour.

IMO scratch resistance:
Fjord, togo, clemence
Chevre
Vache liegee
Epsom
Swift, Evergrain (can rub out)
Evercalf (can rub out)
Barenia (can rub out)
Chamonix
Box

Water resistance:
Fjord
Togo, clemence, ostrich (ostrich responds well to fluids, but I wouldn't go into the shower with it)
Buffalo
Epsom
Barenia
Box
Chamonix, Croc, alligator

I have no experience with vache liegee or chevre in the rain.

Ostrich I place around Epsom.

Lizard doesn't show scratches, but because the scales are so fine I would take care so that the scales don't come off.

Disclaimer: The above list is merely my opinion, that's all, just my opinion. Plenty of room for splitting hairs.

Chevre does fine in the rain, but it was not a soaking rain. I just wiped it off.
I have had Buffalo get literally soaked and it dried to look perfect.
Rain can permanently spot shiny croc. Don't know about matte croc and don't want to find out.

LOL...croc wasn't initially on my own list, but it is great info to have...just in case... Orchids, all credit goes to HG...she has all the info, I am just a motivated shopper...
