Actress Misty Upham reported missing in Washington state: police
SEATTLE/LOS ANGELES - Actress Misty Upham, who played a housekeeper in the movie adaption of "August: Osage County," has been missing in Washington state for six days, police said on Friday.
The acclaimed Native American actress was last seen walking by herself from an apartment on Sunday around Auburn, some 20 miles south of Seattle, and was reported missing by her father on Oct. 6, Auburn Police Commander Steve Stocker said.
Police responded to a suicide call from the apartment but the 32-year-old Upham had already left by the time officers arrived, Stocker said.
There were no suspects or leads in her disappearance and she is believed to have left on her own free will, Stocker said.
Police had responded to suicide calls four times in the past year at the same apartment, Stocker said, and Upham's parents have told police she is on medications for mental health issues.
Upham, who was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her supporting role in the 2008 crime drama, "Frozen River," has not been in contact with friends or family since her disappearance, police said.

oh no how sad, I'm hoping she is found safe or returns home to her family soon. But the realist in me says the past suicide attempts calls are troubling. I can only imagine what her family is going through now

'You don't need to worry about me anymore': Chilling final text of top actress missing for a week as family reveal she was struggling to keep up Hollywood lifestyle

A Washington actress is still missing one week after her disappearance and her family fears she is suicidal, officials say.

Misty Upham, 32, was last seen near her Auburn home Oct. 5. Police responded to a suicide call at Upham's apartment, People magazine reports, but when they arrived, Upham was not there and officers were not able to contact her.

However, this is not the first time Upham has reportedly left her apartment without notice and it is also not the first time police have responded to suicide calls at Upham's apartment. People reports that, in the last year, police have responded to Upham's apartment four times following suicide calls.

Upham's father, Charles Upham, said in a statement that Upham has a 'medical condition,' but neither he nor Upham's mother have revealed what the condition is.

Upham's father recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he fears his daughter is suicidal.

'She had recently changed her medication, so she was sort of having erratic behavior,' Upham's father told THR. 'She told me and her mom that we didn't have to worry about her any more. … I thought it sounded suicidal myself, so I called the police.

'She's always been a suicidal person.'

Upham's father went on to say that Upham sometimes made suicide threats, but 'never went through with it.'

People reports that Upham may have been under a lot of stress prior to her disappearance. A source reportedly told people that Upham was struggling financially and sometimes had trouble paying her rent.

One day after Upham went missing, her father went to the police asking that his daughter be listed as a 'missing and endangered person.'

The police did not comply, saying that Upham's case did not meet the criteria because her disappearance was not 'unexplainable, involuntary or suspicious,' according to USA Today.

Therefore, the Upham family took to Facebook and local media to alert the public about their missing daughter and to enlist the public's help in finding her.

In a Facebook post on Upham's page, the family stated: 'We have been consumed by chasing down leads and doing ground searches in the area she was last seen. It is only her family searching right now, hanging posters, checking with shelters, hospitals, and asking people in the area if she has been seen.

We are asking for help from people who live in the area to search the wooded areas near the Muckleshoot casino.' The post stated that the police are not looking for Upham.

Another post revealed that Upham's family has no income.

'[The] father is recovering from a recent stroke and is disabled.,' the post reads, '...mother is disabled with congestive heart failure...the family is dependent on donations.

The family wrote in the post that they are 'doing everything within our means to bring our daughter home safe.'

Update at 4:12 p.m.: Auburn police say the body believed to be that of Misty Upham was found by a family member who had been searching for the missing actress.

The body was found at the bottom of a 150-foot embankment near Forest Ridge Drive not far from the White River. A purse containing Upham’s identification was found nearby.

The medical examiner’s office will determine a positive identification and cause and manner of death, police said.

Original post: Auburn police say a body found Thursday is likely that of missing actress Misty Upham.

Police spokesman Steve Stocker said the body was found over a cliff in a wooded area. He said there is a “good chance” the body is that of Upham, although no official identification or determination of gender has been made.

Upham, an actress known for her roles in “August: Osage County” and “Django Unchained,” had been missing for more than a week.

Upham, 32, was reported missing by her parents Oct. 6 after she disappeared from the Auburn area, according to the Auburn Police Department. She has been listed as a missing person in the Washington Crime Information Center database.

The day before she was reported missing, Upham’s family called police to report that Upham was at their home in south Auburn and was suicidal. When officers arrived they were told she had already left. Officers performed an area check but did not find her.

Upham was best known for her role in the 2013 film “August: Osage County,” where she acted alongside Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Ewan McGregor. She played Johnna Monevata, a Cheyenne housekeeper who takes care of Violet, played by Streep. The highly acclaimed film was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture.

Upham was born on the Blackfeet reservation in Montana. Her family moved to Seattle when she was 8 and she attended schools throughout King County. Moving to the city allowed her to escape the violence of the reservation and pursue her dreams of acting, she said.

“I needed to lose the reservation,” she told Distinctly Montana Magazine earlier this year. “I needed to leave. My idea was to go to the nearest city and go to the first theater I could find. I would watch movies, take breaks, and eat.”

Her break came at a showcase at Seattle’s Nippon Kan Theatre shortly after high school, when she wrote, directed and acted in a play that someone filmed and sent to a casting director in L.A. The casting director called the next day and asked her to submit a portfolio. Within a month she landed her first role in Chris Eyre’s 2002 film “Skins,” filmed on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

Her next major role was in “Frozen River,” where she played a Mohawk woman who helps smuggle immigrants across the Canadian border. Her portrayal won the 2008 EDA Female Focus award for best newcomer.

In 2012, she co-starred with Benicio del Toro in “Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian,” based on the true story of a friendship between a Blackfoot man and a French psychoanalyst. Upham told Indian Country Today Media Network (ICTMN) that she was excited to play a Blackfoot woman, and that she was planning on savoring every moment of a filming a romantic scene with del Toro.

A direct descendent of Chief Heavy Runner, Upham was proud of her Native heritage and a proponent of Native communities’ economic development and self-determination, her family said. She refused to play roles that portrayed Native Americans in a stereotypical way. She agreed to act “Frozen River” because of the complexity of her character, “a Native American who’s not in Buckskin.”

She founded the Indigo Children Troupe, a non-profit that works to bring the arts to indigenous people. She wanted to give back to the Native community by providing opportunities to others who wanted to act.

“Acting saved my life. I recognize that,” she told ICTMN in February.

Upham’s career was going well, and she wasn’t worried about money, her family said. She struggled with mental illness most of her life and managed it well, until she moved to Washington earlier this year to help care for her father, who had suffered a stroke. Her family said she wasn’t able to get her same medication after she moved, causing her to slip into bouts of depression and panic attacks.

Her family believes that she mixed alcohol with medication, which sent her into a psychotic episode.

Upham was found dead in Seattle suburb Auburn in a wooded area. While police were not originally sure the body was Upham’s, they did report that a purse was near the body containing identification of the actress.
Rector told Variety that she and the family believes the Auburn Police Department could have done more to locate the actress.
“We just want to make it clear that the Auburn police had nothing to do with looking for her or finding her,” she said. “It was friends and family that led the search and rescue teams that found Misty.”
Rector says friends and family confirmed her body at 6 p.m. Thursday, and that no cause of death has been revealed yet.
A statement on the Auburn Police Department Facebook page said it took five hours and a 10-person team to recover the body.
“The Auburn Police Department states that there is no initial evidence or information to indicate foul play; however the Medical Examiner will make the final determination,” the statement wrote.
Upham, also known for roles in “Frozen River” and “Django Unchained,” was reported missing by her family on Oct. 6, a day after they told police she was suicidal. Her father, Charles Upham, noted that she had stopped taking her medication for anxiety and bi-polar disorder.
Upham had moved to Seattle to help care for her father, who was recovering from a stroke. Charles Upham said that he didn’t believe his daughter would commit suicide, saying she “just decided to leave home for awhile.”
“She doesn’t believe in killing herself,” he told KIRO-TV. “She believes that is a sin and she would never do that.”
Misty Upham played Johnna Monevata in “August: Osage County,” the cast of which was nominated for a 2014 SAG Award. She was also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award in 2009 for her work in “Frozen River.”
The King County Coroner’s Office is expected to make a statement on the death on Friday.

I couldn't remember where I recognized her from until the frozen river reference. May she rest in peace and may her family's ins the solace they need in this painful time.

I am not familiar with her either, however I do remember the movie, Django Unchained, but I never saw it (not a big R-rated movie fan :P). It's very sad to see all of these talented stars struggle with the Hollywood lifestyle and end up like this in the end. Rest in peace.

Juliette Lewis has urged police to launch a murder investigation over the death of her actress pal Misty Upham. The body of the August: Osage County star was found in a ravine in Auburn, Washington on Thursday (16Oct14), five days after she was reported missing.

Officials at the King County Coroner's Office are due to make an announcement about the case on Friday (17Oct14) and a cause of death has not yet been revealed, but Lewis is convinced the tragedy has sinister overtones.

She claims Upham, her co-star in the Oscar-nominated 2013 drama, had previously confided in her about her troubled childhood and had revealed fears for her safety.

In a series of posts on Twitter.com, Lewis writes, "RIPMistyUpham I am in shock and greif (sic). I pray the police do a murder investigation. They're saying not 'foul play' when of course it is... Misty spoke out a lot against injustices within Native (American) community. And had known enemies. Police must do an investigation (sic)."
