An eight-year-old dog has touched the hearts of Argentines by saving the life of an abandoned baby, placing the girl safely alongside her own new puppies.

The country's media are calling her "the miracle baby".

She was born prematurely to a 14-year-old girl in a shanty town outside the capital, Buenos Aires.

The mother is said to have panicked and abandoned the baby in a field, surrounded by wooden boxes and rubbish.

Then along came La China, the dog which somehow picked up the baby and carried her 50m to place him alongside her own puppies.

The dog's owner heard the child crying and found her covered with a rag.

The baby, weighing 4kg (8lb 13oz), had some slight injuries, but no bite marks. The owner called the police and the child is now being looked after by the authorities, while a decision is taken about her future.

The frightened mother appeared shortly after her baby was found.

The Argentine media has descended on the shanty town, talking of "the Argentine Romulus and Remus", the founders of Rome, abandoned as babies and rescued by a wolf, nearly 3,000 years ago.

La China, worried about her own puppies, is reported to be petrified by her new-found fame, and her owner says he is worried that she is not eating.

  2. Absolutely amazing! It's just so touching that animals are so willing to care for young that are not their own. I wish more people could be so good.

  3. What a heartwarming story  What a very special & precious doggy!: I'm so happy that poor little baby was found & rescued by this animal angel. I also hope & pray that La China will be okay..I'm worried that her owner said that she's not eating

  4. Ah...great story...hope La China is OK.

  5. LaChina probably thinks they took "her" baby, maybe thats why she's not eating. Dogs are so amazing, I love stories like these.

  6. Oh I know...this is a very touching story!:tender:I also pray that La China is okay too. Poor baby. I just watched the video and La China is such a beautiful dog, hopefully she will get better.

  7. I can believe that! We went to see a bunch of wolves at a farm. My son started crying and the mommy wolves kept coming over to see if he was okay. They seemed very concerned when he was crying. Pacing around him. They were on the other side of the fence of course and he was in his car seat..

  8. ^wolves are so amazing, intuitive creatures, I love them!

  9. What a truely amazing, touching, and heartwarming story! The dog looks like a 'mama dog'! That's what we call our 'mama dog' because although she's not really the mama of most of our dogs she really looks after everyone. You can see in the video that La China is like that. What a very special dog. I hope that people will leave her to her privacy so she doesnt feel so invaded anymore. I know they are saying the baby is a miracle baby, but I really think it's the dog that's a miracle!

  10. That is the sweetest thing ever.

  11. Amazing.

  12. That is such an amazing story.

  13. This is why I love dogs almost more than I do people.

  14. ^believe me, I understand! I prefer the company of my dogs to that of most people ;)

  15. That story just gave me the chills. It's amazing what animals can do and how they care better for their young than humans.
