Hi! I recently bought a 30 Montaigne belt and have only worn it a few times. I’m very careful with my things and noticed a ton of scratches on the belt buckle already. I know it’s a shiny finish and would scratch easily but I don’t even recall hitting/rubbing the buckle against anything to create so many obvious scratches. I was wondering if anyone has also experienced this with their Montaigne belt buckles.

Did yours scratch that easily and is there anything we can do to buff it out or make the scratches less noticeable? Can Dior replace the buckle if needed (thinking long term or if the buckle tarnishes)? I knew scratches were inevitable but I’m disappointed that it got so scratched up with only a few wears.

Are you talking about deep scratches or fine looking scratches all over ?

I have two Montaigne bags and originally thought I did a poor job inspecting the first one at time of purchase as I noticed all these little scratches much later. Then I examined the 2nd bag that was hardly worn and it was the same. Thus, my verdict is the clasp is not actually super shiny, it’s made like that. (I know it sounds weird but I had a similar experience with a YSL bag years ago).

Not deep scratches. They are more like hairline scratches but long and short ones and in numerous places. At first I thought there were strands and bits of lint on the buckle but I soon realized they were actually all scratches :eek:Definitely wasn’t like that when I first purchased it.

Some of the greatest offenders are seatbelts, coat/jacket zippers and desks when getting up. (Not saying any of these happened but they are often what lead to scratches on my belts).

Right…or leaning in and hitting a counter or something. I’m just disappointed it’s so majorly scratched up already when I’ve been so careful. I have older belts that still look great and cost a fraction of the price! I guess I’ll stay away from dior shiny buckles now. Wonder if the shiny lady dior charms get scratched up badly since they’re constantly moving and clanging into one another.

Agree with others that for belts, it's easy for them to get wear and tear easily, even over a short period of time.

Something I have noticed with Dior costume jewelry and accessories (in my experience) is that the metal does tend to tarnish and discolor quite quickly. I had a pair of Dior earrings that I only wore maybe 5 times at most. On each earring, there is a tarnished spot that cannot be polished off. And I spray my fragrances first before putting on any costume jewelry.

My Dior 30 montaigne belt does have scratches. I bought it in 2018? or 2019? (when the price was $750 USD) and I'm okay with that. I wear it mostly as a waist belt, it sits up higher but it's not immune to scratches or bumps.
It has tarnished/discolored quite a bit for the amount of times I have used it though. But oh well, I learned my lesson, haven't bought any Dior items with a lot of hardware since. :P

Lesson learned indeed. I expected hairline scratches over time but I didn’t expect it to scratch this easily and to be as obvious (abundant squiggly and hairline scratches). Then there’s the possibility of the hardware tarnishing which is disappointing. Have you tried to see if Dior can repair or replace the buckle?

I have not asked Dior though I know my SA is wonderful and would probably be able to take it in.

But if they replaced it, it would probably be the same thing and tarnish again in 2-3 years so I don't think it's worth it. Especially for the wait time. I remember for the same belt, I sent it in to get an extra hole punched, and that was about a 2 month wait.

I've just decided to live with it. :P
I've been comparing them to my other belts (YSL, buberry, Hermes) and none of the others seem to have much of an issue. But all of them do not have as large of a bucket or as much surface area as the Dior 30 montaigne.
The 2nd in line for having the most surface area is my Hermes Kelly belt, but it's gold-plated and I know that's probably something Hermes can take in to re-plate.

How bad is the tarnishing? Glad to hear your other belts don’t have issues, I was also considering an Hermes and ysl belt. Are all the Hermes belt buckles gold plated?

Yep for Hermes. The yellow and rose gold are gold plated.

Here’s photos of my CD belt.
Again, I don’t wear it that often and I keep it in a belt drawer so it isn’t that exposed to anything.

Thank you for sharing pics of it! I’m shocked it tarnished like that and wonder if it eventually happens to all the Montaigne belt buckles and even on the purse buckles?? It’s a such a popular belt and I didn’t hear much about the wear and tear. If I had known, I would’ve gotten the Hermes instead.

I looked at a couple on Fashionphile. The tarnishing is there, but not as distinct as mine. (thought, I don't really baby my items tbh).

Yes, I didn't hear much about wear and tear either. I'm not very upset by it but I did expect it to last longer or wear better than it did. :-s

Definitely would have expected it to last longer. Although looking at your pics again, it could look like an antique finish now. ;)
