Hi all, so it's been such a long time since I've bought and sold pre-owned bags. I did a search and it was crazy to see how many options are out there now for selling. I only have experience with ebay and Bonanza.

Can you guys give my your honest opinions on which sites are the best to sell on right now? And share any good or bad experiences selling on any of these sites? I realize some are consignment. Thank you so much!!!

I have experience selling handbags on tradesy as well as eBay (Chanel, LV, BV, Chloe). I believe you’ll get the best return on eBay (They take about 10% of the sale + 2.9% PayPal fee). Tradesy takes a little over 20% from what I remember. Tradesy has changed their policy and if a buyer returns the bag then it comes back to you. I don’t like the idea of accepting returns on such high priced items. (Sellers can get scammed too). Anyway, I no longer sell on Tradesy for this reason and because it takes to long for them to release the money from a sale to you.

I realize a lot of people are hesitant to sell and buy on eBay but I’ve had great experiences so far. I takes pics from all angles and describe any signs of wear. I also state that I do not accept returns. I also record myself packaging the item and purchase insurance and signature confirmation. It takes time sometimes for an item to sell but it eventually sells. I‘m used to selling on my own and find it fairly easy create the listing. When I have requested an offer from fashionphile, they have always low-balled me...so for me it’s not worth it. A little hassle to create a listing and sell on my own is worth it to me to not lose hundreds of dollars. I have sold many bags that I either fell out of love with or didn’t work out for me for some reason or another and those hundreds add up!

I haven’t sold any bags in a while. The last time I sold on eBay was nearly 8 years ago and I had a awful experience luckily I;ve sold enough and had my stuff in order so I won the case. I had decent luck on Bonanza but again it’s been a long time since I sold on there as well, I don’t think they get much traffic anymore. I tried fashonphile and they crazy lowballed me on everything I submitted. I have used Poshmark but nothing high end mostly clothing and contemporary brands. I feel like Poshmark is more community oriented than other platforms. People can like and share listings which can help get more views. I did list a Prada handbag and a Marc Jacobs clutch on Posh, the Prada had no interest and the Marc Jacobs clutch just got lots of lowball offers. You;d have to double check if They still do this but I know when I listed my Parada they had a reqirement that items over $500 had to be sent to them when sold and they ”authicate“ it before they send it to the customer. which made me feel more comfortable selling a higher end item there, lower chance of a customer claiming counterfeit or not as described. Mercari is similar to posh platform wise and used to have slight lower fees but from those I know who’ve sold on there is it[s more bargain hunters, tons of lowball offers.

+1 to what earthygirl said on eBay and Tradesy.

eBay: I sell (and buy) the most often on eBay, primarily because of the low(ish) fees. While it’s more work to do it yourself, they do have decent seller protections in place. I once had a buyer say they didn’t receive a bag & request a refund... but bc I did the postage/tracking thru eBay (and it showed as delivered), they handled it 100%. My main feeling w eBay is as long as you can take decent photographs and aren’t trying to oversell on condition, you’re most of the way there!

Tradesy: sold there years ago but never again, primarily because of their return policies. Back when they would take back/sell returns, I had a buyer return a Proenza bag which Tradesy then sent back to me claiming it was fake. I assume it was bc their team was looking for reasons to not have to handle the volume of returns (and my friend @ Proenza was v amused to hear the bag she got me was “fake”).

Poshmark: I also sell (and buy) a fair amount on Poshmark. It’s nice to just get a shipping label when something sells and be able to use any packaging, but I have to set my prices higher here bc of the 20% fees (with no cap, no matter how pricey the item). For that reason most of my “nicer” bags tend to move better on eBay. That said, it is nice that Poshmark calculates upfront what you’ll make on the price you set, unlike eBay where you get hit with their fees the month post-sale, and the PayPal fees quietly.

TheRealReal: Wildcard. I like buying from there (a little too much), but as a seller I’m mixed. The primary reason I will go TRR over eBay is bc they’re able to get more for certain brands (like LV and Chanel) than I could on my own. Maybe it’s just me, but my sense is that some folks buying $$$ used bags (even for a relative deal) prefer the safety of an “official” business and would be willing to pay more for it there than on a platform like eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, Depop etc. where you’re dealing with a wiiiide spectrum of individual sellers. Currently I’m not thrilled with TRR’s communication re: my latest consignments there, I feel like they could be better at stuff like notifications that items were received / accepted. The fees they take are also tiered depending on your status/how much you consign -OR- what the resale value is if certain items. They pay you monthly, by direct deposit, check or site credit (where you get 5% more).

And that’s it for me... on the other sites you list I’m either a looker or buyer, never a seller (yet...)

I appreciate all of your comments so much! It is painful to sell bags that were hunted down with so much excitement and treasured but never worn. But at some point, it has to be done. So, it is helpful to know what sites work better than others.

I haven't sold any Bal bags on eBay for MANY years!!! Bottom line, the only B-Bags that I will buy nowadays are ones that I wish to add to my collection, soooooooooo .. not too many in that category. It is a SHAME that some (even HG) bags are on eBay for the most ridiculously low prices! Now all that being said, here's my take:
  • eBay - I sell quite a bit of Jewelry on eBay, but not the real high-end stuff because it just doesn't move well on eBay. That being said, yeah .. overall, they take the less .. but yes, you do all the work (not a huge issue to me).
  • Tradesy - never used it .. period. However, based on what I'm reading, I'm not interested!
  • Mercari - used it to sell a few small Bal items (accessories) and while they (I believe) take the least percentage, my god .. it took almost a week for that $$$ to hit my Bank Account and as such, I said "good-bye".
  • Poshmark - arrgghh , the bane of my existence! Yes, the Bal accessories sold quickly but my god .. the low-balling on this site is unbelievable, and forget putting anything up that is > $500 because then it has to go through their "authentication" (which means that it will take longer to be put up on their site). Personally, I find the 20% rather high .. especially on more expensive items, so I ONLY put up the cheap stuff! You then have to wait for the individual to "approve" the item before the money gets put into your Poshmark "account" (you are responsible for getting it into your bank). What I HATE, HATE, HATE about PM is the CONSTANT need to be on the stinkin' app! This BS of having to 'SHARE' not only your stuff but everyone else's crap is ridiculous and these "parties"??? .. PUHLEEZE!!! Most of the stuff that is sold on there (like Michael Kors?) .. is NOT my taste. Bottom line, don't bother with higher-end products and .. oh yeah, their "authenticators" don't know their stuff (I had a real-deal rare Olive FBF up and it got taken down as not being authentic - seriously????). My last peeve with Poshmark, is that I have had WAY TOO MANY returns because the stupid buyer DID NOT read the text. Of course, then PM gives me a "warning". After this last batch (which I may actually transfer to eBay), I am 100% DONE with Poshmark!
  • Bonanza - are they still around? For some odd reason (they never told me why), I got kicked off and they absolutely refused to tell me why. I can only think that someone told them that I sold fakes, and I surmised that it was likely someone who actually did sell fakes because I then saw MY PICTURES on a Chinese website!
  • Yoogi's - I recently consigned a few of my Bal "more rare" bags and the prices weren't bad and they paid VERY quickly!
  • Fashionphile - I have to say that FP is probably my favorite, but they have been swamped after the NM <-> FP "merger", so do expect that it will take longer for them to get the stuff up on their website. However, that being said, the items DO seem to move and they pay PROMPTLY when the item does sell! Or - you can have them "buy it" outright, but of course, the price is less (personally, I oftentimes use this option since I just want the $$$ at that point)!
  • LuxDH - never heard of it.
  • Rebag - "chatted" online with a Rep who said that their Buyer would contact me the next day; well .. that never happened. I have heard that they are the worst in regards to "low-balling" what they will pay you, but then of course .. they jack up the price on their site.
  • Vestiaire Collective - a European (online) site; personally I have not used it, but I have bought items from it. The not so great thing here is that the "authentication" is done in France and as such, the item may not get to the Buyer for a few weeks which will impact the pay-out to you. I have also seen pretty horrible fakes on the site ..
  • The RealReal- oh boy, where do I start????? There are good & bad things about TRR (you will see many of my comments in the TRR thread in the "General Shopping" area of TPF), but bottom line .. I would not consign any Balenciaga items to them unless it is the high-end exotics. Bottom line - I would say CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!
    • Their pay-out commission percentage is not great if your item is under $1000
    • You get your "payment" on the 15th of the NEXT month (which - yes, means that they make money on the float)!
    • Per their Consignment Agreement, if your item does not sell at the full price (as noted on their website), they will reduce the price by 20% w/in 60 days. I believe (not 100% sure) that after 90 days, it gets reduced 30% .. bottom line, of course, your commission payment is decreased!
    • Right now, it is taking them FOREVER to get your items up on their website (I'm still waiting for them to get some of my high-end Jewelry up and it was consigned in EARLY August)!
    • They have CONSTANT (Web & back-end) System issues. An example - last month, "somehow" for over 30,000 consignors, our payment information was "erased" - UH, EXCUSE ME??? That is INEXCUSABLE (I am a former Financial Services IT person - you NEVER mess with someone's Bank Account and/or Credit Card information - EVER)!!! But - get this (yes - this story gets worse) .. TRR didn't even have the BALLS to send out a notification to these 30,000+ consignors!!! The only way I found out, is that the gal that I work with (Luxury Acct Mgr) sent me a "heads-up" about it. In addition, TRR didn't even tell their Consignor Relations team (I found this out when I called to BIATCH)!!! WTF???? I demanded to speak to the Consignor Relations Manager and he consulted with their IT Team (I told him to do so) .. and then comes back to tell me, "well they said no problem, it will be paid next month" - WHAT???? NFW!!!
    • Given the above, yet again .. I shot off an inflammatory email to their CEO with the threat of a class-action lawsuit (as they were breaching their consignment contract)! I got paid w/in a few days, but I heard that many others did not.
I know that there are additional places out there, but can't speak to them personally! Good luck!!!!!

I know @Lakotan , right??? We are both "old-timers" (not talking age here) Bal enthusiasts, so yes .. I remember those "hunting" days, so much fun (well, maybe not for my wallet).

Hey C! Yes, those were the times. I could not wait for your reports on new season colors and your reviews. The anticipation of receiving a new/used bag and opening the package, smelling the leather, touching, assessing, modeling and looking in the mirror...so miss it. And looking at everyone’s collections! Bag porn, lol!

I know!!! .. miss those days!!! I have found some amazing "oldies" on eBay (or TRR - but they always seem to f'up the color!), so that is still kinda fun!

My experience from selling my Bbags in 2017 and 2018 — they were all sold to FP at god-awful-low  prices. I didn’t want to deal with selling them on my own on EB. I had previously sold many contemporary bags on Tradesy when they used to take returns and sell them in their own closet. I know Tradesy no longer accepts return, they just slap a shipping label on the box to send it back to you without looking at the item to see if it was used/damaged by the buyer (so not cool!). No way would I ever sell on Tradesy again. A kind of interesting fact, back in 2017/2018 when I was selling my Bbags, YC would not accept any of my 2005 bags in great condition due to “not accepting 2005 and older bags” at the time! On the bags that YC accepted, their quotes were lower than FP. I have used YC recently for a non-Bal bag because they offered a higher quote than FP so I can’t rule out YC completely . I should add that FP only offered direct buyout for all my items whereas YC offered both consignment and direct buyout (YC’s consignment prices were higher than direct buyout but still lower than FP’s direct buyout for my bbags)

If/When I decide to sell any of my Bal bags, I ALWAYS get quotes from both FP and Yoogi's .. and sometimes Yoogi's is better and sometimes FP is better! Either way, totally agree with you on the .. just get them sold and not dealing with the buyer per se! I'm probably kinda weird, but once I make up my mind to sell something, in my mind .. it's already gone and I just want to get it out of my house! I've been selling a lot of Jewelry on eBay, but it's a heck of a lot smaller .. so it's kind of easier to deal with!
