Does it matter where you buy it so long as it's stamped with 14k?

The reason I am asking is because I am interested in a the Alex Woo Little Letter necklace, but I found something similar at Ross-Simons for a fraction of the price. Is there a difference between the quality of the actual gold?

Metal alloys vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer, but there are industry standards. If it's marked as 14k, it has (or should have) the same gold content as any other piece marked 14k. The other metals in the alloy may vary a bit, but the gold content should be the same.

Yup, like PeacefulMommy said, 14k is 58.5% gold and the rest is the mix the jewelry maker chooses for strength or color.

Different brands/design houses might use different percentages of the other metals included with the gold, but the amount of actual gold would be the same.

For instance, I had a Toscano necklace that was but a much richer, deeper yellow than my Tiffany chain, which was a more white yellow... and I had a cartier pendant that was more orangey yellow, and a macy's no-name chain that was only a little bit yellower in color than the tiffany chain, but was heavier and just as great quality, but cost oodles less.... but all were 18k stamped.

Ultimately, if there is no difference in the quality or make of the piece you like that is less expensive and you aren't buying for the name, I say get it and enjoy it!

I wouldn't buy from Ross Simmons. I've had some REALLY bad luck with them (things like misrepresenting things as 14k when they were 14k gold filled. Their jewelry is not very well made and they don't stand behind it if you have a problem.

So, in answer to your question: yes, it can matter, and it can matter a lot.

I agree! plus it is not just the 14k gold you are buying you want to make sure the craftsmanship of the piece is sturdy and something you can wear and enjoy without worrying about stones falling out, clasps breaking etc...
