Italian fashion house has toned down its pop-culture-infused designs to court older, wealthier shoppers

Two years ago, Gucci emblazoned its clothes with the New York Yankees logo and the face of Bugs Bunny. Now, the Italian fashion house is embracing Princess Diana and Jackie O.

Gucci is courting older, wealthier clientele to stabilize revenue as its five-year run of remarkable growth, fueled by younger shoppers, peters out. Creative Director Alessandro Michele—hailed as a visionary for eclectic, pop-culture infused designs that lit up social media and attracted millennials and Gen Z—is shifting to more subtle designs that play on the brand’s decades of heritage.

“They are going after the largest, yet most neglected, segment of luxury buyers—baby boomers,” said Pauline Brown, professor at Columbia Business School and former head of the North American division of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE, one of Gucci’s major rivals.

“Older consumers not only have the means to buy their products, but they’re living longer, healthier, more fashionable lives,” she said.

Executives at Gucci and its parent, Kering SA, say they are counting on the new aesthetic to broaden the label’s client base and drive growth, following a four-year run from 2015 when revenue more than doubled. That plan has grown more urgent since the pandemic, as revenue plunged and flocks of tourists from abroad—avid Gucci customers—stayed at home. When a second wave of lockdowns swept the West, brands across the luxury sector scrambled to replace the tourist revenue.

Gucci has lost market share during the pandemic to two of its rivals, Louis Vuitton and Dior, both owned by LVMH. Those brands have more well-established customer bases than Gucci, with better connection to non-tourist customers, especially in Europe, said Jean-Marc Duplaix, Kering’s chief financial officer.

The Italian brand is both working to retain the huge numbers of customers it attracted in recent years—particularly older millennials who are now turning 40—and court less trend-focused wealthy buyers among Generation X and the Baby Boomers.

The change was evident in Mr. Michele’s latest collection, which was shown in November in a six-part online movie directed by U.S. filmmaker Gus Van Sant. Sports logos and cartoon characters were nowhere to be found; looks and silhouettes were simpler than in years past. The movie also features a number of older models and a host of items with traditional Gucci flourishes, such as the horsebit loafer.

“A lot of the subtext is linked to the heritage and those parts of the collection that will have a stronger appeal to high net-worth individuals,” said one Gucci executive.

In the collection, Gucci introduces a reinterpretation of one of the brand’s handbags made famous when Princess Diana carried it in the 1990s. The label’s January menswear collection also unveiled the “Jackie 1961,” a reinterpretation of a Gucci handbag carried by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Mr. Michele hasn’t abandoned his penchant for envelope-pushing and streetwear that drew in younger shoppers. Many of the designs in the new collection are androgynous. Sneakers are in abundance, and the new collection features a Gucci skateboard and basketball. But those touches are less prominent than in previous collections.

“We are opening a new chapter at Gucci,” Mr. Duplaix said in October.

Sales were flagging when Mr. Michele was plucked from Gucci’s design team and installed as creative director in 2015. His off-the-wall, heavily embroidered designs and the brand’s digital marketing campaigns attracted droves of younger shoppers from New York to Beijing. Fashion shows became spectacles that popped on social media. Revenue in 2018 rose to 8.3 billion euros, equivalent to $10 billion, from €3.9 billion in 2015.

At the brand’s Milan fashion show in February 2018, Mr. Michele combined 17th-century-style lace collars and other antique stylings with the logos of the Yankees, the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Models walked through a reconstruction of an operating room carrying replicas of their own heads.

At the Gucci show that year in Paris, Mr. Michele debuted a handbag in the shape of a Mickey Mouse head. One model walked the runway with a cockatoo on her shoulder.

From 2019, growth slowed substantially. One incident loomed large: The brand was denounced for selling a black sweater that covered the lower half of the face, with bright red lips surrounding a cutout of the mouth. Critics likened the garment to blackface. Gucci pulled the item and quickly apologized but faced a barrage of criticism.

Gucci executives said the controversy depressed sales in the U.S. for a number of months, with North American sales rising just 1.1% in the first half of 2019 after years of double-digit growth.

In December, Mr. Michele unveiled a collection that was a significant departure: one heavy on formal wear, lacking many of the embellishments of his previous collections.

“More of the same is clearly not going to get you places,” said Luca Solca, an analyst at Bernstein. “Knowing you have a problem is halfway to solving it.”

It does seem like the Gucci forum is a bit less active these days.

Though older, I am not wealthier haha. But definitely prefere less ornate and I do like the revisits to the classics such as the Jackie.

I've always found it amusing how too many major designer houses forget the simple fact that it's we old farts that have the money. Not the kiddos. Exceptions abound, of course, but this sums it up:

I don't know why premium designers always try to court the 20, early 30 year olds, when these girls don't have steady funds to purchase luxury items, aside from daddy's girls or celebrities. This is a wise move, especially now that there is no niche that targets women over 40 and fashion is hard once you hit 40. You're not old, but you definitely can't rock what 20 year olds wear. So this is indeed a clever business move.

I'm interested in seeing what Gucci has to offer from now on.
 
This is disappointing to me. I really like all the wild loafers and tiger motif. I’ve purchased 8 pairs of loafers since Alessandro became creative director. It’s what drew me back to Gucci after many years (after Tom Ford left). I’m older than a millennial and I like the fun designs. In the last few months, I haven’t seen anything on the gucci site that I had to have. It makes sense now, hearing that they are going for more classic designs.
 
Firstly II declare I'm on the cusp.

In addition. I seem to have always been drawn to products that fall between the wildest Hermès pieces and the most classic Gucci items. Not that I've been immune to Frida's ostentatious excess or AM arty madness but rarely.

Perhaps, what Gucci is experiencing is that young people (under 25, not 40) do what they naturally do. Play with fashion and have all the choice in the world, they only have so much money and have to consider price, trends, peer pressure, etc, whereas over 25s are looking to invest pieces than transcend trends, time and work for all kinds of occasions.

I gotta say I loved the more-is-more approach Michele brought to so many designs; I can do without the Mickey Mouse branding and other pop culture prints (though I love Disney, just not on clothing??). But I think the animal motifs and other rather roccoco elements can translate well to more classic designs.
 
Interesting to read everyone's perspectives and I look forward to see how they will court both the "younger" and "older" customers. But as we know, certain styles are not necessarily appealing only to younger buyers and vice versa.

Honestly...I feel like millennials didn't shop at gucci much anyways.

Most millennials I see and hear of shop at startup brands like everlane, Away, Madewell, Polene, Cuyana, etc.

If anything I feel like Gucci was more trying to appeal to Gen-Z...but this is just my opinion.

People are out here acting like we spend all day making TikTok videos, when we’re getting Botox and paying off mortgages.

I know.

Even when Gucci was boasting about having nearly 50% Millennial customers in 2017.

I mean, approx 50% over and 50% younger than 36 is actually average for luxury brand.

Posting non-news for a mega-brand was just a PR stunt.

What luxury brands adore is when the mainstream and financial media are talking about them. And, although it's a false-positive story, it reads like a positive. Confidence breeds confidence, esp. for shareholders.

MILAN, Italy—Pop titan Harry Styles and Gucci announced a joint clothing collection on Monday, developing their longstanding fashion alliance into a formal partnership.

The 25-look collection, codesigned by Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele and Styles and dubbed HA HA HA (a playful reference to the pair’s initials), will hit Gucci stores in October. Encompassing sport coats with meaty lapels, neckerchiefs and glen-plaid topcoats, the clothes have a palpable ’70s look to them, and were introduced inside a Milanese vintage store alongside decades-old pieces.

“We were sharing for a long time images of eccentric men from that era,” Mr. Michele said of the inspiration.

Throughout his solo career, Mr. Styles, the flopsy haired ex-One Direction star, has been a committed Gucci muse, regularly sporting the label’s eclectic designs on stage and in photoshoots. In December 2020, Mr. Styles wore a tiered Gucci dress on the cover of Vogue magazine, cementing the singer as a contemporary style icon, while sending pundits into a tizzy about the gender-contorting outfit.

“No rules,” said Mr. Michele when reflecting on that pot-stirring dress.

Making the collection was “kind of like working at home on a rainy day between two friends, doing something to have fun,” Mr. Michele said during a news conference introducing the collection. The singer, who is touring his new album “Harry’s House,” wasn’t in attendance.

Mr. Michele said they began working on the designs in earnest around a year ago and designed much of it over WhatsApp and at the occasional dinner. Working together, said Mr. Michele, gave the friends an excuse to see each other.

The HA HA HA collection reflects a new chapter in Gucci’s business strategy. During a presentation with investors and analysts earlier this month, Kering, Gucci’s parent company, detailed plans to expand the Italian label’s annual sales to €15 billion from €9.73 billion, largely powered by “the high potential of Young Millennials and Gen Z” consumers.

Under Mr. Michele’s tutelage, Gucci has reeled in younger, wealthier shoppers through rarefied, splashy clothes. This month, a poppy, pattern-drenched collaboration with German sportswear giant Adidas drew block-long lines at Gucci stores.

Mr. Styles, meanwhile, has a rabid fashion-minded fan base that diligently tracks the singer’s outfits through Instagram accounts. “It’s interesting how they are open to learn more about the things that he’s doing, the things that he’s wearing,” said Mr. Michele.

The partnership with Mr. Styles exemplifies Gucci’s millennial catnip approach. Sweaters and T-shirts brandish lyrics from Mr. Styles’s chart-topping songs like “Watermelon Sugar.” Many pieces, such as zip-up boots with a heart on the side and a set of pajamas splayed with a pouty bear pattern, tap into “the idea that fashion is something that makes you feel forever young,” said Mr. Michele.

The intent, said Mr. Michele, was never to do basic concert merchandise like T-shirts and hoodies. “It’s about beautiful pieces,” he said. “I mean, they are not that cheap.” The collection will be priced similarly to Gucci’s current collection, a brand representative said—meaning those PJs are set be more expensive than a ticket to one of Mr. Styles’s shows.
