China (as in, dishes) would be the traditional thing to give a person on his 20th anniversary. Regis Philbin, however, will be getting a blast from the past.
Kathie Lee Gifford is scheduled to be a guest on Live with Regis and Kelly next month, to help mark the beginning of the morning show's 20th season on the air in national syndication.
The perky chat maven left the show, then called Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, in July 2000, after occupying the chair next to Philbin's for 15 years. Kelly Ripa was plucked from the ensuing parade of guest hosts to be named Gifford's permanent replacement in February 2001.
Live will honor its Daytime Emmy-studded two decades with a two-week celebration that kicks off Sept. 3 and culminates in Gifford's appearance on Sept. 14, as the show looks back on its most memorable moments and offers an in-depth look at Live through the years.
"Our 20th anniversary is a huge milestone for the show," said executive producer Michael Gelman, whom Philbin often likes to include in the improvisational "host chat" segment of the show. "Few television shows reach a year on the air, much less two decades. We're proud that we've been able to bring fun, laughter and a positive start to the day to millions of viewers for so many years."
Gifford joined the coffee klatch in 1985, when it was still known as The Morning Show and aired solely on New York's ABC affiliate. The chatfest joined the ranks of the nationally syndicated in 1988, when it was renamed Live with Regis and Kathie Lee.
Live with Regis and Kelly currently draws about 3.7 million viewers each morning, often trailing only Oprah and Dr. Phil in the syndicated talk show ratings.
