Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie
Now the joke's on them.
Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, who made fun of regular people on their fish-out-of-water reality show "The Simple Life," have been canceled.
"'Simple Life' has been a wonderful addition to the E! schedule for two years and we will always be grateful to Paris and Nicole for the hard work and graciousness," a spokesman for the cable network said yesterday.
What's unclear is whether Twentieth Century Fox, which owns the show, will try to shop it elsewhere or reinvent it with other stars.
"No decision about the future of the franchise has been made as of yet," a Fox spokesman said.
Being snubbed by E!, the home of "The Simple Life" for the past two seasons, is the latest in a series of embarrassing events for Hilton and Richie.
Hilton served a tumultuous 23-day jail sentence last month for driving with a suspended license.
Last Friday, Richie was sentenced to four days in jail after pleading guilty to driving under the influence.
An E! insider suggested the network decided to cancel the show because the public already sees way too much of these girls.
"We felt like the real-life drama of their lives overshadowed anything happening on the show," the insider told Us Weekly magazine.
"Viewers would see Paris all day long on the news about her going to jail, so they didn't care about seeing her camping with kids. It just was too played out."
