Fabric is harder to clean because it can absorb any cleaners and cause it to darken more. However, rubbing gently with a dry soft neutral eyeclasses (microfibre) cloth can remove some dirt without causing the fabric to fray.

Perhaps try spraying it with scotch guard or other good fabric protector. And ,don’t keep things like pens, loose makeup or bottles of lotion in your bag which may stain the fabric.
