Love the Selma, it has such a classy and sophisticated look while being a very functional bag with a lot of space!
I would get the tote- but it depends on what youre looking for. While I like the Selma I found it too small for ME and also a bit stiff. Both are nice though. 
In my opinion, the tote is more casual and every day type of use. The Selma is classy and a little bit more dressy. I guess it depends what you're looking for.. Also, the tote has a MK charm and the Selma doesn't.. Is it important to you that you're able to flash your Michael Kors?
I am on team Selma. I love mine. And I do find it to be pretty spacious for my daily necessities. (It would be a tight fit to have my scarf, water bottle, computer, and mini portfolio at the same time. hehe.) But, I find, with the cross body, it helps to dress it down enough for a casual day. And of course looks super classy when you are dressed up.
I am finding it very practical and elegant. It it now my absolute fave bag!
And I love that it is so light! That is a huge plus for me. And I am loving the subtle branding, it makes it look like a much more high-end bag. It is really a steal.
