Help with choosing a new bag

I'm looking for a new bag for daily use and I could use your suggestions to help me find what I'm looking for.
Now that winter and slippery streets have arrived, I avoid going out on high heels and opt for more casual shoes and thermal wear. I've found that my Versace multi-ring hobo doesn't go with my casual winter style at all and I've been using other bags lately.

I would like a medium - large sized leather shoulder bag that would go well with both casual clothing (jeans, casual winter coat, sneakers or hiking shoes) and more stylish outfits (wool coat, high heels). It would be great if the bag had room for an A4 (210 × 297 mm, 8.3 × 11.7 in) folder and daily necessities like a bottle of water, a wallet and a couple of cell phones.
I don't have any specific budget, but price is something I consider when I choose a bag.

The shape and style of Valentino Aphrodite, Mulberry Bayswater and Max Mara Margaux have caught my eye, but the Valentino doesn't seem like it would fit a very casual style. Does the Bayswater look good, if I look like the Michelin man on my way to work?
Are there other similar kind of high quality bags that you would suggest?

i love all the bags you've chosen, but i do think the Valentino is a bit dressy (unless you don't mind it being the center of attn. of your look,) i would go for:

in order of preference:
1. the Max Mara, i really like it and not many people have one i think
2. Bayswater, classic and chic
3. Aphrodite, just because it's very dressy. but unless you don't mind that, then i move this to #2!

Bayswater can be quite stiff and formal-looking, depending on the leather. It's not what I'd call a shoulderbag - doesn't fit on the shoulder over heavy winter clothing, so consider whether you'd be happy with it hand-held (the Bays for Macbook apparently has slightly longer shoulderstraps, but not by much). It's quite a heavy bag in the classic NVT (natural vegetable tanned) leather.

I love the style (I have 6 ...) but it's not what I reach for when I want practical or comfortable.

ETA: the Bayswater is much discussed over in the Mulberry sub-forum, I've dug out just a few useful threads from the hundreds which came up in a search:

Thanks for the input, everyone!

I stopped by at Max Mara and Mulberry to check out the bags. I ended up picking a chocolate brown Max Mara Margaux (the smaller version in calf), which looked more stunning in real life than in any pictures. The leather was
silky smooth and sturdy that kept the structure of the bag. It looked very nice in the crook of my arm with casual clothing. The flap's lock was easy to use even with long nails, easier than Mulberry Bayswater's lock, which was slightly smaller. I wasn't that fond of the flimsy feeling leather of a camel colored Bayswater (I don't know what kind of leather it was) which I examined in the Mulberry boutique.

Overall I preferred the Margaux's appearance and feel over the Bayswater. I'll post some pictures soon.

Congrats!!!! I am happy for you .I love the Max Mara Margaux. Elissabeta, I'm very happy with my purchase. :3
The staff in the Max Mara Helsinki boutique mentioned the Margaux bag has been a very popular style and they only had a few of them left in the store. I haven't noticed anyone carrying one yet, though.

MAy I ask the price of the bag? It is beautiful!
The smaller bag's price was 675 euros, and the larger bag is 725 euros I believe.

Here some quick photos of the chocolate Max Mara Margaux (Junior). Sorry for the blurriness of the images.
