Not in the Wang gang
at all, but I don’t think it’s fair to say that it was a direct shift from NG to Demna and totally sidestep Wang.
Like in a literal sense, under Wang in 2013, the boutiques were already being renovated to fit his vision of a Parisian-aired marble look, and NG's aesthetic was wiped away.
Wang was likely appointed CD due to the success of his own brand at the time (like Demna and Vetements), however unlike Demna, perhaps he was intimidated by the role and then got burnt out from doing Bal AND his own line (vs. Demna likely could rely on some sort of aesthetic support from Guram for Vetements for his first 3 years at Bal). Imo it shows in his final SS 16 collection, which is arguably his "best" because likely his senioritis ended up letting him approach it in a more relaxed "this is me" kinda way.
From Wang, Demna essentially inherited a kind of renovated blank slate (since Wang didn't really push anything forward)... like NG did in 1998 - imo, that's why one can't really say it was an NG to Demna rebrand.
Bal needed something new, Demna had the chops, so it made sense especially considering where social media was going for fashion/beyond in 2016...
Every creative director for every storied house ultimately goes back to the original archival silhouettes. The difference where Wang is concerned, imo, is that when NG and Demna went to the archives, they made them their own...
Perhaps that's what PP meant when he mentioned them, because he sure does have the ability to do the same!
