Default Roady Hobo Angst
Ok, I cannot decide between the black patent, pebbled or smooth Roady Hobo. I own a black pebbled Easy so one would think I should do something different...but I'm very drawn to it. My local Saks does not carry YSL so I can't see these in person. For those who have, tell me what you think about the different leathers. I'm not considering the chain detail leather primarily because of price. (It sure is a beauty, however)

So...patent, pebbled or plain? Thanks!!

I personally would recommend the blk pebbled as I've seen it and the patent irl. this is from some who is a big advocate of ysl patent, and the patent roady is on my wishlist.

the reason I didn't choose the blk patent is b/c it looks so much better in the colors offered this season. the roady is pretty basic so having just a blank shiny canvas is a little too plain for me.

as for the smooth, im always afraid i'll get some bug scratch on it, which makes me not want to risk taking it out much..if that's the case, what's the point,

I saw the blk pebbled, not like the besace pebble, right? and it is very beautiful and a classic bag to have. pls share what u end up getting!

yikes, sorry for the many typos, was on my cell phone when i posted earlier. anyways, i did try on the patent roady and it was super light, which is a BIG plus in my book, since you can really get into trouble with overstuffing this bag since it's so roomy.

it's got a lovely broad base, easy to lay things flat. i was concerned about the bag being too big, but the SA said it will soften and collapse more around your body as you wear it.

the patents colors are so so pretty, grey, navy, teal, red and black ofcourse. there is a slight texture to the patent leather as well, but i think if you are looking for the most classic out of all 3 choices, the texture would be the way to go.

Thanks for the assist! Can't wait to see some modeling shots for those who have already purchased this bag. I am getting closer to a decision and will post when I have the winner in my hands!

windy55...

I would definitely go with the patent or pebbled leather! I just had the Roady in smooth, black leather sent to me & I was not enthralled. I sent it back the next morning. There were a few issues with the bag:
1. There was a fingernail length or a bit longer (not huge) scratch prominently in the middle of the bag. I found this hard to believe because the boutique on Madison Ave. just received this shipment of Roady's last Sunday & I had the bag sent out for overnight delivery on Tuesday. In other words, it wasn't in the store for even 2 full days!

2. Perhaps it was just my particular bag, but when the bag was snapped at the top to close it, it seemed that the bag became "crooked" at the top. It's hard to explain...the bag's top ridges did not line up at all...not even close.

3. Now, I'm sure this may just be me...there is ample room in the shoulder drop of the Roady. However, it didn't feel right to me...almost like it might fall off. Perhaps I'm just being paranoid.

I hate to sound so "down" on the bag. It was just too plain for my taste & in the smooth leather, there's a lot of black space that appeared to me to be plain & a bit blah. I think the other leather choices would be great in this style though. Good Luck!!

I just went to the YSL store in Paris on Faubourg St Honore yesterday, and they pulled out all the roady bags they had to compare and despair! Here is a summary:

Patent - looks great, super light and a good price point. The blue was amazing. The bag is quite big and I question whether items may get lost in the bottom!

Bubble- They claimed they only had it in the blue and red. I asked them if it came in black and they claimed it did not. It is lambskin so the salesperson told me it may be more delicate then the calfskin. It was lightweight.

Calf - The cheaper black bag does not have feet and a plain black strap. The interior is suede. It did not 'wow' me. I too am afraid it would scratch easily, but the salesperson assured me that is was much tougher than the lambskin which is found on the chain and the bubble bag.

Stingray handle- This bag is in calfskin and has feet. The interior is dark suede and has a pochette attached in the interior. It is attached via a suede strap. It is not built into the bag. This was my favorite bag. The handle has a bling element to it and they assured me that it would not wear down. Fairly light and easy to carry. This is the bag Christy Turlington is modeling in the ad.

Stingray - Bag was amazing. Super hot and had texture. I saw it in a blue which was amazing. Lightweight.

Chain - super soft leather. The chain is in foam, which helps with the weight. The leather is sewn in the middle and it is considerably softer than the calfskin. It has no feet. It is heavier than the other bags. It has a satin lining. It is the same price as the black calfskin with the stingray handle. It thought I would love it, but I was lukewarm on it. The salesperson hinted that the leather was quite fragile and may not be a great everyday bag. The color is great, but since it has the foam chain and a lining, it is a bit heavier and the leather is delicate which made me walk away from it.

Hope this summary helps a bit. I have my eye on the black calfskin with the stingray handle. It pops and still remains super chic.

Thanks, Lulagirl - I appreciate your review of the smooth leather. I can see how this bag might be a bit underwhelming. Are you considering it in one of the other leathers or are you done? Elainerkitty gives a great overview of the different options in her post. Seems she is with you on the plain leather, too!

Great review! When I spoke to a couple of YSL associates, they agree about the calf/stingray handle and the stingray bag. They claim those are the best of the Roady's. So while I may have been able to eliminate a couple, two more options may have taken their place! Thanks so much - very helpful. And how lucky are you to live in Paris!!

The chain bag I have on pre-sell at Saks has suede interior-not the satin lining...may have to agree with the bag being delicate, but loved the leather....did like the Stingray too. The chain to me was super cute because of the line down the center and instant "ruching-like effect"....JMO.

Did not see a bag with the Stingray handle though...want to see that!

Hi windy55!

I'm not sure what alternative I'm considering. The girl who was helping from the YSL store on Madison LOVES the plain leather because she thinks it wiil look the best with the Stingray handle when those come in...thinks the stingray will pop the most against plain black leather.

I'm just a little underwhwlmed with the regular leather & think I like the gray stingray printed one better. I haven't seen the stingray in person mind you...just in last month's Town & Country. I may be incorrect but I don't think it would look nice to get the bag in stingray print if I'm planning on getting a stingray handle to switch out with whatever Roady I choose. Does that make sense?

I think Elainerkitty gives a wonderful summation as well. I just think my particular SA is stuck on the plain leather because she claims it to be the most versatile. I think I may just get the bag in stingray & forget the handle...who knows!!!

Thanks - I have ordered the pebbled leather. Will let you know how it goes. Now I can obsessively worry that it will be too big. :)

I wouldn't worry about that. That's the great thing about hobo's, they slouch once they're filled and never look as big as when empty. I hope you post lots of pics when you get her!! :)
