I just purchased my first YSL bag today -- a white coated canvas with black leather trim Downtown Tote -- from Nordstroms. It was a customer return and was marked down to $594.90 (orig price: $1495).

The bag's in excellent condition with tags & care/auth card and sleeper.

The SA told me that very rarely, if ever, has she seen the leather ones go on sale. I've always liked this bag a lot, but as a devoted MJ girl, I don't like to spend lots of $$ on other designers, unless it's a really "special" bag. This seemed like a good price. What do you guys think -- Is this a good price for this bag?



p.s. it's still full price at NM! -- how can that be? were there different versions?

I think you got a pretty good deal. That's about 60% off, right? And this version of the Downtown is not all that common or easy to find. I hope you enjoy it. Its a great everyday tote.

Yes, it was 60% off (and I was very surprised to see that this bag is still full price at NM) -- but since I'm not very familiar w/YSL bags, I really didn't know if this was a good price or not. Of course, my SA told me it was, and she was really encouraging me to buy the bag (and she knows that I'm a devoted MJ girl!) -- she couldn't say enough about this bag. I guess YSL is HER favorite designer. But I don't know how much of that was real honesty and how much was just trying to make a sale.

Of course, I'd rather have a leather one (esp one with suede lining
), but this is a really nice bag -- I just want to make sure I didn't jump the gun -- like maybe I CAN find a leather one for around $6-700???

I think you got a great deal, it's a good looking bag, and even better as a 'beater' because its canvas. I have Paul Smith shoes that are a coated canvas, that is very similar to the kind on your bag. They don't stain terribly, and wear well. I don't know if that's an adequate comparison though. Congrats anyway! And yes, you need a DT in leather, for sure. Yes, I'm enabling.

Fyi, here's a pic of Caroline Kennedy with a slighly different canvas Downtown at the Capitol earlier this summer. I think it would be difficult to find a leather Downtown at that price. (Although crazy things can happen at sale time, as I'm sure you know!)

I just mean that the fabric Downtowns don't seem to be as prevalent as the leather and patent leather Downtowns. If you do a search a few other members have them tho...

I agree with Cosmo that this type of downtown is very unique and hard to find. Perhaps they did not make that many.
