That sounds pretty average for frames and lenses. It might be worthwhile for you to get personal vision coverage as well. The one I know of, VSP, costs $200/yr and covers an exam, the lenses, and frames up to $120. I believe there's a 20% discount or something like that on additional pairs. A lot of places take VSP, and the ones I've been to have all been excellent, not the el cheapo places that take my current company insurance.

I have really bad vision like -11 and recently had to stop wearing contacts. I paid around 310 for my coach glasses which was 210 for frames and 100 for poly (plastic) lens and 25 scratch and reflective coating. I also bought some prada sunglasses whcih came around to 400 bucks and I had to buy some fendi glasses for other contacts I wear for 230. Also does anyone use an extra vision plan? I have coverage through my parents from kaiser but I do not have an allowance and pay a 30 co payment.

If you want designer frames, I went to the store to try on frames and wrote down the model #'s for ones I liked and tried to find them cheaper online. I went with this website since they had the frames I wanted for much cheaper, it was about $100 less than retail stores. I bought D&G frames from here. Then I just brought the frame to the retail store and had them put the lenses on my frames. HTH!

I am glad you got to save money! but wasn't it hard to find a place that would just fit the lens into a pair of frames? I mean what would of happen if they broke the frame? Do you have a high perscription?

Thanks so much, guys! This really puts my shopping into perspective. I've been wearing the same pairs of glasses for years as my prescription hasn't changed much so I had no idea what new glasses cost these days. Yowzers!

Thanks so much, Lilsmiles! I was wondering if one could do that sort of thing. I'll check out the web site. Thanks!

The place I went to was Macy's Vision Express. They're listed as a provider under my insurance which is Davis Vision. I asked Macy's if I could bring in my own frames and they said sure that would be fine. Since my lenses are covered under my insurance, I paid Macy's nothing to have the lenses fitted to the frame AFTER I brought the frames in. However, they did get payment from my insurance for the lenses so at least they didn't get $0 out of it.

I also just remembered that in the past when my prescription changed and I wanted to upgrade the lens but not buy new glasses, I brought it to a store and they just upgraded the lens to my new prescription for me. Back then I didn't wear my glasses often so they were a cheap frame and I didn't mind getting cheaper lenses so it was only like $25 to replace it. My prescription still isn't that high now, -2.50. Even if you did buy the frames at the same store, they would still have to fit new lenses with YOUR prescription to the frames you choose so I don't think it should be a problem bringing in your own frames... But it couldn't hurt to ask first just to make sure. =)

Definitely check out Costco. They have a pretty good selection of glasses, and the prices are unbelievable. Most frames are $40-$80. Plus, you get $25 off each pair additional pair you buy after the first one. I went and picked out frames a month ago, and next week I will get the prescription filled. But I think the lenses are very reasonable as well (I think the man said it might be around $80 for mine? Hope it comes out to that when I bring it back! ). My mom has crazy prescriptions, and usually one pair of glasses could be $700. But she got 2 pairs for under $400 total at Costco.

I usually wear contacts, but sometimes my allergies act up and I have to wear my glasses during the day. It's great knowing that I have a pair that I love; I don't feel self-conscious wearing them.

I have to get the thinner lenses too and progressive ones on top of that and I have a weakness for designer frames consequently my last pair of Chanel's cost me $700, but my lenses are almost $400 -kinda sucks, but I like having cute glasses!
