I know EXACTLY what you mean - it's hard to use the bigger one as a clutch with knuckle straps even when you only have a cellphone and a wallet inside. So I loop the chain long and wear it as a messenger bag.
The small one is actually a lot more versatile - more structured and manageable in my hand, with just enough room for the necessities (phone, small wallet, lipgloss)
