Default Woman throws cup at the Mona Lisa
Thankfully, the painting was unscathed, because the glass smashed on the bullet-proof glass that was surrounding the painting.

It happened on August 02, and the woman was arrested.

"It looks like it was done by someone who was unhinged and wanted to draw attention to herself," a Louvre spokesman was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

I know. What? Did Mona Lisa look at her wrong, or something?

I always liked that smirk of hers.

The woman sounds nuts, but honestly... IMO, the Mona Lisa is ugly. So, I kinda laughed when I read that. Not that I would throw a cup at it, but I could see why someone would.

Why? Because she's ugly? IMO there's no excuse for throwing something at art. If it's yours....go ahead and do what you want though.

the artist would roll in his/her grave just saying cos I was at a discussion of artists about the rights connected to their works. even if you bought it, you cannot do whatever you want with a work (cutting up, destroying it etc.), artists feel bad about it and at least in Europe it's forbidden (moral rights)

I read this somewhere else, can't remember now where and the article mentioned that it sounded like Stendhal Syndrome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stendhal_syndrome
Slightly OT but fascinating! Maybe she wasn't to blame she was just completely overwhelmed by the beauty of it...

While I have no plans on doing anything to it, I remember reading somewhere da Vinci knew it wasn't his best work and wasn't really even done with it, not an artist so have no idea why is wasn't "done". I also read he would hype it up as the worlds most beautiful painting/beautiful woman despite his true feelings on the issue and some have claimed, don't know if this is true or not, Mona Lisa is actually a man dressed as a woman. So, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm just saying I think it's ugly. However, I have no intentions of throwing cups at it. *Gets out blow torch* JK really.

Maybe this will urge them to prompt the restauration that needs to take place quickly as it's beain eaten up from the inside.

I'm actually a bit surprised that she even got a glass in there.
